Australian Fashion Week 25 Hair how-to: Bianca Spender x Shark Beauty
I will preface this with the admission that I am a huge Bianca Spender fan – a super fan, if you will. I still have a gunmetal grey, sequin jacket from her very first collection, and have added more and more of the designer’s pieces to my wardrobe since. To say I was excited to see her latest outing at Australian Fashion Week 2025 would be putting it mildly – and it did not disappoint!
Taking place at St Barnabas in Ultimo, Spender’s show, titled “Deliquesce”, was inspired by water and its movement. Using fabrics like nylon and organza, the designer ventured into swimwear for the first time, apparently influenced by her own love of ocean swimming. Spender’s foray into swimwear was new, but so too was her heightened emphasis on the body – sheer organza showed off midriffs and thighs, while tuxedo-style blazers were left open at the chest. Gowns were connected with thin straps that revealed shoulder blades and swimsuits were cut high, resulting in an unabashedly sexy collection that I absolutely loved.
The hair director was Chris Hunter for Shark Beauty, who said: “For the hair looks for Bianca Spender’s show, we wanted to capture the moment someone steps out of the water - but steer away from the typical high-shine wet look. It’s more about a lived-in, undone texture that feels natural and effortless. It’s wet, but not slick - there’s separation, softness, and a sense of calm that feels beautifully real.”
Spender herself added, “I’m completely obsessed with swimming in the ocean - it transports me into another world. This collection is inspired by that feeling of plunging into water: the sense of weightlessness, the constant motion, the way everything moves around you. I’ve always been drawn to fluidity and movement and that idea shaped everything from the loops and twists in the fabric to the silhouettes themselves. It all started in that underwater world, and I wanted each hair look in my show to feel like a different wave — each girl moving through it in her own way.”
An elevated and modern wet texture look was created for each and every model in the show, the hair team enhancing their individual texture rather than fighting it – and the results were just beautiful!
2. Position your parting, the direction the hair will travel.
3. Apply a thickening styling spray with strong to medium hold on top of the wet hair focusing on the root area. This helps to make the hair more pliable and mouldable.
4. Once you have the desired direction, set the shape by flattening and moulding the hair into the desired style.
5. Use small pin curl clips to hold the sides flat and narrow to the head.
6. While the pin curl clips are still in, use your Shark Beauty SpeedStyle with the diffuser attachment to dry the product and most importantly set the look.
7. If you have a wavy/ less coily texture and have some fly-aways needing some grooming you can add your Rapid Gloss Finisher attachment to your Shark Beauty SpeedStyle and lightly run it over the top layer of your mid-lengths and ends to tame any fly aways.
8. Make sure hair is completely dry before removing any of the metal clips. Remove clips gently, so you don’t pull any of the hair out of the shape.
9. Use a dry wax spray to add shine, flexibility and a runway ready finish to the mid-lengths and ends applying liberally all over.
