Hair how to: Guido for Redken at Dior Cruise 2019

For the Dior Cruise 2019 show, designer Maria Grazia Chiuri went heavy on the equestrian theme, even bringing a dash of Latin American showmanship to the royal stables of the Domaine de Chantilly by kicking off proceedings with a display by a team of female Mexican rodeo riders.
The name – Diorodeo – certainly set the tone, and the show even took place in the middle of the historic Chantilly Castle’s stables, now home to a museum dedicated to man's noblest companion.
Backstage,  Grazia Chiuri told press: “Chantilly is the city of lace, and we wanted to remain connected to our heritage, to the Dior tradition. But Chantilly is also the city of horses, and that is why we decided to show here.”
Redken Global Creative Director, Guido Palau capitalised on the equestrian theme, saying: “The inspiration for the show is very equestrian, so the hair look was inspired by a horse’s tail, which is why you’re seeing this very exaggerated, long ponytail. The hair is bound at the nape of the neck with a bit of extra hair to recreate that binding you see on horses.”
To get the look at home:
1. Start by prepping the hair well by washing with Redken All Soft Shampoo and Conditioner.
2. Towel-dry.
3. Start with a clean, centre part using a tail comb to get a straight, clean line.
4. Apply a $2 coin-sized amount of Redken Satinwear 04 throughout your lengths and ends.
5. Blow dry your hair using a round brush for a smooth, soft texture.
6. Add in hair extensions – if needed - to create an exaggerated, long length.
7. Using your fingers, clean up your hairline and gather your hair up into a low ponytail while leaving your ears covered.
8. Tie your hair with a hair tie, and then take a section of hair to wrap around then down the length of the ponytail. Secure with a bobby pin.
9. Spritz hair with Redken Forceful 23 Hairspray to hold the look, using a little extra at the crown for added hold.

All about: Bondi Sands Everyday Liquid Gold Gradual Tanning Oil

It is clear from the weather of late that summer – and autumn! – are most definitely over. I’m a bit of a fake bake connoisseur right through both seasons, and also like to keep a little glow on even when the layers aren’t dropping off. You never know when you might book that tropical holiday on a whim and hey, I think I look better with a bit of a tan anyway. So sue me!
This is when I like to make friends with a gradual tanning formula, and one that I’ve been playing with lately that also keeps my winter skin nourished is an absolute wonder by the Insta-famous (with good reason) Bondi Sands.
Called Everyday Liquid Gold Gradual Tanning Dry Oil, it’s a lovely, skin-loving product enriched with Argan Oil that cares for your skin while giving you a beautiful skin-kissed glow that lasts and lasts. It is ideal for anyone who wants a great tan with minimum fuss and effort - no rinsing required! – and also for anyone who is a faux glow novice and might be a little nervous about slips ups on the coverage front.
I love that Bondi Sands Everyday Liquid Gold dries super quickly so you're ready to dress in just a few moments, and it is now a regular part of my morning routine. It develops into a beautiful light to medium tan that you can build up as you see fit. It’s also a great way to prolong any gruntier tanning products that you may have applied a few days earlier, to avoid any telltale patchiness and whatnot.
Super easy to use, you simply exfoliate in the shower and clean and dry your skin well before applying Everyday Liquid Gold Gradual Tanning Dry Oil evenly onto the skin in circular motions. Wait until it's dry to the touch before getting dressed, and you’re good to go. Use it every day or as often as needed to maintain your tan – I’m finding that application every other day is definitely doing the trick for me.
Oh, and did I mention it also come scented with coconut, for the ultimate almost-in-Fiji feel? Highly recommended and super affordable at RRP $24.99, it’s in store at Life Pharmacy, Faremers and Unichem. Get yours now!

Love it: La Mer’s new Replenishing Oil Exfoliator

Crème de la Mer is one of the most well-regarded - and luxurious - skin creams in the world, thanks to its unique use of sea kelp, eco-friendly processing and above all, the astonishing results the cream yields. It’s also one of the world’s most luxe beauty brands, with an avid following of women who collect its iconic creations by the boxful.
Celebrity lovers of the brand include ‘it’ girl Cara Delevingne and her model sister Poppy, famous faces Blake Lively and Jessica Alba and the multitalented powerhouse Jennifer Lopez, who seems to look younger by the year and confesses to covering her body in Crème de la Mer on a nightly basis. But beyond celebrity endorsement, La Mer also has a remarkable back story, which blends ingenuity and perseverance into a miraculous tale about the creation of a brand that thrives today by helping women look younger.
The story began 40 years ago with a NASA scientist named Dr. Max Huber who was badly burned in an explosion at his laboratory. An aerospace physicist, Huber was injured when a routine experiment to develop rocket fuel went wrong, leaving him with severe burns on his hands and face. Dr. Huber went on to survive the accident and set out over the course of the next 12 years to create a product that would help smooth his badly disfigured skin. What began as one man’s journey to repair his own physical imperfections resulted in the creation of a product that would become a modern beauty icon and loved by women all over the world for its ability to halt the ageing process at every turn.
Dr. Huber experimented with an amazing 6,000 combinations before he hit on a concoction that would help to smooth his damaged skin and become the cornerstone in the La Mer line. The beauty of his formula was that the ingredients were quite basic; the success depended on the quantities of sea kelp, lecithin and vitamins he used, and the months that it took to complete the bio-fermentation of the product. The outcome to these trials was a product he named Miracle Broth. From there he went on to create Crème de la Mer, the flagship product in what is now a much expanded – and beautiful - line.
Which brings me to their newest release, the revolutionary new drop known as The Replenishing Oil Exfoliator. I love a truly luxe beauty item – it stirs the senses and the emotions like you wouldn’t believe, and at every turn you feel like you are allowing yourself that little bit of time for extra pampering i.e. true ‘me’ time in every sense of the word. I also love the feel of using oils on my skin – face and body – and am already a hige fan of their beautiful The Renewal Oil, so I just knew this would be a winner.
A multi-dimensional facial exfoliator that goes easy on the skin but delivers results, the new oil gently removes impurities and replenishes the skin while going through quite the transformation (beauty geeks, rejoice!).  What starts off as a gel-like, semi solid oil in a very La Mer golden hue melts into a silky liquid oil when it makes contact with the skin. Once splashed with water, the formula transforms once again into luxurious, creamy oil. When even more water is added to the mix, it transforms yet again into a replenishing, creamy texture that you rinse off. Gentle enough to use up to four times a week, it can also be given a little extra grunt by being applied to dry skin with dry hands - clever!
At the heart of the Exfoliator is the brand’s legendary Miracle Broth, plus a medley of natural exfoliants like sugar crystals and sea salt that gently buff to reveal a soft and refined complexion. Natural sea kelp fibres help to detoxify by drawing impurities from the skin’s surface, whilst a “Brightening Blend” of molasses and vitamin C help bring back that all-elusive glow.
With an RRP of $165 for 100ml, the new Replenishing Oil Exfoliator is available right now from La Mer counters nationwide and online at

All about: Advanced Nutrition Programme supplements for skin

They say what you put on your skin is only half the story, and ingestible beauty products are huge right now. Part of that is due to the endless flogging of them on Instagram by Women In Stretchy Pants, and part is due to the fact that for some people, they really do work. When it comes to healthy skin, what you put inside the body really can be as important as what you apply topically.
“Great skincare starts from within” is one of the main catchphrases used by UK-based Advanced Nutrition Programme, who are the creators of an amazing professional-only nutritional supplements range that is now available in New Zealand. I was lucky enough to meet Lorraine Perretta, a nutritional consultant at the International Institute for Anti-Ageing (iiaa) and brand manager for the Advanced Nutrition Programme range of supplements, a few weeks ago, and damn – she was inspiring. Over breakfast at Greenleaf Organics she shared a few of her insights with myself and several other beauty editors, as well as giving us all more than a few good reasons why a quality  - emphasis on the word quality here – can make a wealth of difference when it comes to the kind of result you want from your skin.
The Advanced Nutrition Programme is a cutting edge nutritional system that has been designed to support a topical skincare regimen recommended by professionals. The premium range of nutraceuticals is designed to provide optimum daily amounts of vitamins, minerals and other vital elements to support a healthy lifestyle and to help maintain a glowing complexion.
Problems like dryness, excess oil, congested skin and the signs of premature ageing may benefit from targeted supplements from their Skin range, and client feedback proves it gets results. Research from the British Journal of Nutrition in 2006 concluded that taking oral supplements has many benefits over topical application. It supports the importance of supplements that feed skin over the entire body, in an easily absorbable form and which can nourish even the deeper layers of the skin. In an industry that focuses so much attention on treating skin topically, it’s easy to forget that cells are made deep within the skin where creams never reach. Beginning a skincare regime by feeding the body with the necessary nutrients to make perfectly formed cells is the foundation to a flawless complexion.
The key skin vitamins fall into two categories – the nutrients that make the skin and those that protect it. The crucial skin cell makers are vitamins A and C, plus essential fatty acids, but the question is, do we get enough of these from our diet? When we eat, the body makes sure that vital organs like the brain, heart and liver get nutrients first. So, even if you’re eating a good diet you may not be eating enough to nourish all the essential organs as well as your skin.
If there aren’t enough essential fatty acids to make a perfect membrane for your skin cell then the water inside the cell can leak out, leaving skin dry and flaky. Moisturising creams provide a band-aid approach to the problem but they can’t repair the cell membrane within. Great supplements like ANP can provide key vitamins, essential fats and plant nutrients, ensuring the body can make ‘perfect’ skin cells. Plus, topical treatments and skincare products work better on well-nourished skin, so beauty supplements can actually help to turbo-charge your  skin.
I’m midway through a trial of the brand’s Skincare Box Ultimate, which Lorraine called the “gold standard” pack that offers a powerful combination of supplements designed to support healthy skin, strong hair and nails and brighter complexion. It includes Vitamins A and D, Omegas 3 and 6, seven different antioxidants, Astaxanthin plus biotin and CoQ10 plus pine bark extract. In a word: magic. It’s a great pack for those whose skin needs a kick start back on the road to glowing, and comes highly recommended for brides or those with a big event on the horizon. After that, I’m hoping to try a combo of their Skin Accumax and Skin Omegas+ to try and put paid to the rosacea that I suffered so badly over the summer months.
To find out where to find an ANP stockist near you, head to the Beauty Care website to find out more – they come super highly recommended.

NYFW hair how to: Moroccanoil X Oscar de la Renta Resort 2019

According to Vogue, back in January, Oscar de la Renta’s Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia received a call from Meghan Markle about a wedding day look for her mother Doria Ragland. “She knew she wanted a pistachio or melon look for her mom,” Garcia told the magazine, and just a few days after Ragland looked stunning in the label on her daughter’s big day, the pair presented a Resort collection at New York Fashion Week that featured similar pastel hues and white floral embroidery as the royal mother of the bride. The runway lineup was ladylike and pretty, and Moroccanoil Artistic Director Kevin Hughes created a perfectly effortless-looking hair look to match.
To re-create the careful study in simplicity at home, try the following:
1. On damp hair, use a dime size amount of Moroccanoil Treatment –or Moroccanoil Treatment Light for finer tones— from mid-length to the ends to provide the perfect foundation for styling.
2. Next, apply the Moroccanoil Root Boost to root area of the hair for control and body.
3. Apply Moroccanoil Thickening Lotion to the mid-lengths through ends for instant fullness and long-lasting body.
4. Then create a center part and blow dry the hair using the Moroccanoil Ceramic 55 MM Round Brush and Moroccanoil Professional Series Ceramic Hair Dryer until dry.
5. Separate hair into 1.5 inch sections, spray sections with Moroccanoil Perfect Defense to protect hair from heat styling.
6. Use a 1.5 inch flat iron to create subtle waves throughout the hair and seal the ends using Moroccanoil Mending Infusion.
7. Finish the look with a dusting Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray Strong to keep the hair away from face.

Love it: Bobbi Brown's new Long-Wear Sparkle Stick

Bobbi Brown’s long wear shadow sticks are modern beauty icons, and with good reason. Super easy to use and incredibly quick to apply even for an impatient sort like me, they apply and blend effortlessly, and last all day. Their colour payoff is also major, so they last and eternity and need zero touch ups. Sold? Let’s just say I usually have about six on the go, they are THAT good.
In more good news, there is now a brand new sparkle version in the lineup and yes, it’s also a winner! Called the Bobbi Brown Long Wear Sparkle Stick, they are a stay-put shadow that shines bright thanks to multidimensional pearls that give a prismatic finish, delivering a sparkle effect to the eyes. I was recently told by an international celebrity MUA to embrace the shine on my lids as I age due to its super flattering effect, and these beauties sparkle in just the right way to keep things on the chic side as well as being fun.
The new formula is available in nine Limited-Edition shades - Aurora Pink, Prosecco, Molten Bronze, Gilded, Rose Quartz, Galactic, Moonstone, Sapphire Blue, Tanzanite – and they can be used together or alone. Each specific shade has a custom blend of pearls that enhances the colour payoff and packs an intense sparkle finish. A unique water-based gel technology is behind the sticks’ staying power, which also helps the shades remains fade proof throughout the day.
They are also Dermatologist tested and Ophthalmologist tested for contact lens wearers like myself, and the fact that they dry quickly is a bonus if you’re time poor or just a little lazy like me! Last but not least, the ‘gellified’ water base system - consisting of an amazing 40 per cent water –makes the stick cool upon application, which I think helps with puffiness first thing after a big night.
These beauties are on counter now with an RRP of $60.00 x

Talk with an expert: Swisse’s Di Mitchelmore

Early last month vitamin powerhouse Swisse Wellness launched its new, extended beauty range, which calls on consumers to re-think the traditional beauty model by integrating skincare with supplements to support yourself ‘ínside and out’.
Over a delicious breakfast in the private room above Britomart’s Amano, beauty insiders like myself were introduced to the four new skincare and four new supplement products, some of which contain breakthrough ingredient Sicilian blood orange, sourced from the volcanic surrounds of Mt Etna in Italy.
“Swisse is leading the industry towards a holistic approach that is more in keeping with current thinking around wellness and caring for the whole self,” said Swisse Marketing Manager, Tineke Vlooswyk. “In line with this, we think it’s time to reconsider the traditional beauty régime and adopt approaches that treat the self both inside and out,”
All natural products that are free from toxic ingredients, the range has taken pure ingredients from nature to create luxurious, nutrient-enriched skincare products, including an Intensive Hydration range (Hyaluro-Natural Moisturising Facial Serum, Hyaluro-Natural Hydrating Facial Mask and Hyaluronic Acid Firming Eye Serum) as well as a Blood Orange Brightening Serum.
Specifically-tailored supplement formulas with a unique combination of vitamins, minerals and herbs designed to support healthy hair, collagen formation and skin radiance include Swisse Ultiboost Hair Skin Nails+, Swisse Ultiboost Radiant Skin, Swisse Ultiboost Hair Nutrition for Women and Swisse Ultiboost Age Protect complement the skincare range.
My personal fave from the supplements is Swisse Ultiboost Age Protect, which is a premium beauty formula that helps support the skin’s firmness and elasticity as we age. It’s jam packed with ingredients like Cacao, vitamins A, C and E, Green Tea and Co Enzyme Q10 to keep skin strong, supple and at its best. From the skincare lineup I’ve become obsessed by the Hyaluro Natural Hydrating Facia Mask, which is like a tsunami of moisture for your skin and great for use overnight whenever you need it.
After the launch I spoke to Di Mitchelmore, who has Bachelor of Science in Immunology and Nutritional Biochemistry (Bsc) and is also Swisse’s Australian training manager. She was a wealth of information – no surprises there – and didn’t shy from answering some of my curlier q’s…

What is Swisse’s top selling supplement, and why do you think that is?
Without question, Swisse Men’s and Women’s Ultivites are the top selling supplements in our range.  They’re also the No.1 selling Multivitamin range in New Zealand pharmacy, which is a testament to their success!  The Ultivites have been Swisse’s flagship products for over 20 years, and have a unique blend of premium quality vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and herbs designed to support men’s and women’s health, unsurpassed in our eyes by any other multivitamin in the market.

The brand has just introduced products that help with the skin, hair and nails in earnest, such as the Age Protect one. What makes them different from say, the various beauty powders and oils and whatnot on the market like Bestow Beauty Oil and The Beauty Chef?
Swisse are experts at sourcing and formulating the best quality ingredients for therapeutic effects on the body. Nutrient rich superfoods are a great way to supplement a healthy diet, and it’s so wonderful to see more natural options aimed at internal support of our skin and health. Our products like Hair Skin and Nails liquid, Radiant skin and Age Protect take the impact on a healthy skin barrier to the next level as they contain registered therapeutic herbal and vitamin ingredients at potent doses!

How long do you have to be taking them before you see a difference?
That varies so much from person to person, the state of their overall health, their lifestyle and diet and it also depends on what natural ingredient you are taking. B vitamins for example, have been shown in research to have quite a quick positive effect on energy levels, however minerals and herbs for hair and skin health may take some months as the new cells regenerate and new hair and skin appears.

The companies mentioned above are great, but pricey. Is that fancy marketing do you think? Swisse seems to be able to keep costs affordable.
Thank you, yes, we believe that our products need to be accessible to most people as we have a vision to make billions around the world healthier and happier!  It’s our global buying power of high volumes of premium ingredients for both our vitamin supplements as well as our skincare, that keep our products affordable. We invest in our relationships and support our valued suppliers, so that we can produce quality premium products that include precious ingredients from nature and pass on those benefits to the customer.  Our global mission is to make millions of people around the world healthier and happier, and part of fulfilling that mission is to make our products accessible.

We know we should all be eating better, but taking supplements really helps fill in the gaps on those less-than-great days! What are some of the ingredients in the likes of Age Protect that we may not really be able to get at therapeutic doses ourselves?
I love the convenience of bringing these amazing ingredients into our daily routine.  100mg of Green tea extract would take a lot of cups of green tea a day, which may not be practice in our busy lives.  Potent antioxidant like Co-enzyme Q10, which naturally decreases as we age and Alpha Lipoic acid, the King of antioxidants support skin firmness, elasticity and collagen formation.

What are some foods we can eat more of for great skin?
Colourful vegetables!  For breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as snacks! Bright colours of red, orange and green are packed with potent antioxidants that support our collagen formation, hydration and skin renewal! We also need to add more healthy oils. My favourite is Extra Virgin Cold Pressed Olive Oil – buy small bottles so it’s always fresh!

What supplements are your favourites from the range?
Our Hair Skin and Nails Liquid is a favourite as it contains our precious and potent blood orange from the volcanic soils of Mt Etna in Sicily Italy as well as a high dose of Silica. It has a broad action so is suitable for all women even in pregnancy.  If you are seeking more specific skin support, especially if you are getting older like me, then I love to use and recommend Age Protect as the combination of potent antioxidants support my skin’s firmness and elasticity. Perfect!

And what are your ‘essential’ picks from the skincare range?
Our Blood Orange Brightening Facial Serum contains anthocyanins and vitamin C that helps to slow down pigmentation and age spots so this is an essential for me! I’d add our Hyaluronic acid firming eye serum for the sensitive area around the eyes where fine lines first appear.

The company was bought by a much larger group based in China. Will that effect the supply chain for ingredients at all? There has been talks of Chinese buy outs resulting in magnesium sourced from areas with heavy metals present and the like. Should Swisse customers be worried? (I hope not, I love your products!).
No not at all!  By expanding our products to more people worldwide we only strengthen our buying power and relationships with suppliers. Swisse have always been committed to the best quality ingredients and have rigorous standards in place around testing for contaminants like heavy metals. It’s clear cut safety and health first!

Get the look: Lancôme Ambassadress Lupita Nyong’o at Cannes

Vogue called it her “Major Prada Princess Moment”, and it’s safe to say it was one of those moments when actor and Lancôme Ambassadress, Lupita Nyong’o came to Cannes 2018 and literally slayed.
Although she’d favoured Dior Haute Couture and Miu Miu on previous days, when she arrived at Chopard’s Secret Night at Chateau de la Croix des Gardes on May 11 she was sporting pure Prada princess perfection.
Make-up artist Nick Barose created a stand out beauty look to compliment the prettiness of the gown and Nyong’o’s drop dead beautiful face, with quirky accents to keep things modern and fresh. “For tonight, her peach tone gown looked playful so I wanted the make up to be playful too,” said the celebrity MUA. “I played with a bit of 60s influence to give the eyes some fun quirks by adding bold green in the crease to play it up and add a bit of drama.”
To recreate the look at home:
Prep well with Lancôme Hydra Zen Gel cream, which Barose describes as “light, hydrating without being greasy, and perfect for warmer Cannes weather”.
Under eyes, apply Lancôme Energie De vie Eyes before prepping the T Zone with La Base Pro Oil free.
The iconic Teint Idole Liquid Foundation in 550 was applied all over, with Teint Idole Concealer in 510 Suede C.
A dusting of Translucence Pressed Powder in 550 was brushed across the T Zone set the look, before Blush Subtil Palette in Rum Raisin was applied to the apples of the cheeks.
Liquid highlighter Bronze Glow was dotted on top of the cheekbones to catch the light.

Brush brows up using brow gel Sourcils Styler in Clear, then fill in the shape without making things too dark using Sourcils Gel in 06 Noir.
Line the upper lash lines with Grandiose Eyeliner in Noir, “tracing it along lash lines and winging it out a little bit”.
Prep the lids using Lancôme Eye Makeup Primer Aquatique in Sienne (a product I am gagging to get my hands on!) then set with powder so it creates the perfect canvas for the colorful creases.
Play up the crease of the eyes to get that 60’s graphic look uisng Le Stylo Waterproof in Vert Tuileries. Start from the inner corners and curve it out by tracing it slightly above the creases (see below). That way, when your eyes open, it really shows.
Adds two coats of black mascara in the form of the seriously amazing Monsieur Big in Noir.

Prep lips well with Absolue Lip Balm, another beauty I’m dying to try.
Trace along lip lines and fill in the lips using Lancôme Lip Liner in Vermillon, before applying L’Absolu Rouge Fini Brillant in 011 Rose Nature.

Add glow to the body using the brand’s iconic Nutrix Royal body cream.

Love it: NARS Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation

Available now at Mecca Cosmetica, NARS’s incredible new Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation is one of the smartest of the longwear bunch that I have been lucky enough to play with and a definite must-try.
Unlike many of its ilk, this nourishing longwear has a beautifully velvet finish and is a cinch to apply, blending easily with fingers or my trusty Rae Morris Radiance brush (another Mecca find that I now can’t live without) and settling perfectly onto my skin. A little also goes a long way, so start small and build up depending on your desired end result.
It is actually formulated to improve the skin hour by hour with its skin optimising complex -a blend of raspberry, apple, and watermelon extracts that helps support skin elastic fibres to smooth and improve skin texture (often needed in winter), while specialised pigments recognise and fuse with your skin for your closest match yet.
With a 16-hour, fade-resistant wear along with full-powered radiance, its medium-to-full buildable coverage stays vibrant and fresh, as if just applied, all day long.  The staying power is enhanced by a patent pending technology that delivers a uniquely weightless texture with superior blendability for an imperceptible effect that really, truly looks like skin. I have never had more compliments than I do when sporting this formula, and that’s despite my fluctuating rosacea and drier skin from the constant changes in weather. I’m finding I don’t need any additional powder to set the formula, but that may change in humid weather or if you have an oilier skin type.
NARS Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation is available in New Zealand exclusively at Mecca Cosmetica, Mecca Maxima and online at, with an RRP of $78.00. Available in 33 skin-matching shades - ranging from deep espresso to the fairest tones – I think this relative newbie is a bit of a game changer, and I just can’t get enough. Highly recommended and worth every cent!
