Love it: M.A.C Cleanse Off Oil

I’m in Sydney as I type, as a guest of the always-amazing M.A.C Cosmetics at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia – hallelujah to that! One of the first things I did upon checking into my hotel – the rather delish Park Hyatt – was crack into a goodie bag of M.A.C skincare products straight after donning my robe.
I have to confess that I hadn’t tried a lot of the brand’s skincare options before now, despite being completely mad for their makeup. And boy, was I missing out when it came to one very fabulous cleanser!
That cleanser is M.A.C Cleanse Off Oil, which is an industry-strength oil-based makeup remover that's gentle on the skin. Botanically formulated with oils of olive fruit, evening primrose and jojoba seed, it’s also absolutely 100 per cent mineral oil free – which always gets the biggest of ticks in my book. It effortlessly massages onto the skin to loosen all makeup - including waterproof mascara – and emulsifies into a lotion-type liquid with water that rinses off easily, no tissues required - and no residue! Suitable for all skin types, it seriously cuts through even my hardest-to-remove products without batting an eye, like long-wearing lipsticks, waterproof mascaras, gel liners, stick foundations — you name it, it melts it clean away.
It’s great on the anti-ageing front too, abundant in Vitamin E and requiring next to know tugging or rubbing of the delicate eye area. If you haven’t given this baby a go already then I highly recommend that you do – I’m planning on giving it a workout all this week, and will report back!

What a Steal: Garnier Intensive 7 Days Body Cream

With Garnier unleashing a dynamic duo of ultra rich creams for the neck down at an absolute steal of a  price,  there is simply NO excuse to neglect your bod under all those layers this winter!
Winter weather is famous for leaving your skin high and dry, so grab yourself a pot of Garnier Intensive 7 Days Body Cream – or two, at a RRP of $10.49  for a mositure boost that will keep things soft and supple right through the cooler months. An ultra-hydrating, ultra-repairing cream that contains a concentrated formula to target extremely dry skin, it is enriched with 10 per cent hydrating active ingredients, and has a non-greasy, non-sticky texture that immediately absorbs into the skin. I recommend applying after a shower when your skin is still slightly damp, and picking your greatest need: there are two different creams formulated with different skin issues in mind, featuring ingredients derived from nature - Shea Butter for extra-dry skin and Mango Oil for dry, rough skin.

Cute vid from Bobbi Brown: the Lonely Make Up Bag!

In love with: when OPI meets the New York City Ballet

After a summer spent sporting all manner or brights and neons, over the past few weeks I’ve been going for a softer nail shade as the temperature drops.
Lucky for me then that those clever, super duper creative types at OPI have paired up with the New York City Ballet to unleash upon the world six new additions to the SoftShades collection, which was inspired by the company’s costumes and choreography, as well as the dancers themselves.
New York City Ballet by OPI features five sheer shades lightly tinged with beige, pink, white, lilac and grey, as well as a silver-y, sparkly number that can be worn alone or layered over the top of your pick of the others for added shine and dimension.
As a former dancer myself, the beige, pink, and white lacquers bring to mind classic ballet slippers, soft tutus and leotards, whilst the lilac and grey are just plain pretty.
The full line up includes:
Barre My Soul – a sheer, almost naked beige
You Callin' Me a Lyre? – a soft shell pink
Don’t Touch My Tutu! – a wispy, dreamy white
Care To Danse? – an on trend lilac
My Pointe Exactly – a sheer grey
Pirouette My Whistle – a silvery sparkle
All of the new collection will be available in May, so start keeping an eye on your nearest OPI counter now.

Giveaway: Antipodes Apostle Skin-Brightening & Tone Correcting Serum

Over the past couple of months I’ve fallen head over heels in love with the Antipodes skincare range after experiencing an incredible facial at the hands of their gorgeous beauty expert and trainer, Steph.
One of my favourite products – seriously good enough to eat – is Apostle Skin-Brightening & Tone-Correcting Serum, which is a delicious new water-based corrective serum that helps target pigmentation, brightens your skin and restores even tone. It is packed with revolutionary bioactive ingredients taken straight from nature, and has been clinically shown to decrease trans-epidermal water loss, leaving skin moist and hydrated. It's also shown to decrease the melanin production which causes freckling and pigmentation, and reduce redness or facial flushing. This baby is going to be a regular in my routine over winter when the weather can really have an impact on my sensitive skin.
Essentials in the formula are Waiwera mineral water (voted the world’s best water), Antipodes’ scientifically validated Vinanza Performance Plus to minimize pigmentation caused by over production of melanin, and Vinanza Oxifend from red grapes ato reduce skin redness and even out skin tone, leaving you with true, fresh-faced beauty. It’s also dermatologically approved for sensitive skin like mine, which gets a big tick in my book.
To use, apply liberally to your face, neck and décolletage morning and night before your favourite Antipodes moisturizer or face oil – and I can vouch for the fact that you really do get the best results from daily use.
I have five, full size 30ml bottles of Apostle valued at $65.00 each to giveaway, just email me at with your address and you’re in the draw. Hallelujah!

In love with: Clinique Quickliner for Eyes Intense

One of the best products to add to your travel arsenal, Clinique’s Quickliner for Eyes Intense is one of the cleverest – and easily portable! - little tools I’ve come across in a while.
Perfect for creating daytime looks or saucy after hours numbers, Quickliner for Eyes Intense is a phenomenally versatile eye pencil, providing richly pigmented colour payoff for instant intensity and pop. It builds on the success of the mega brand’s best-selling eye pencil, Quickliner for Eyes, with a super soft creamy texture that glides on without any drag and a beyond decent colour saturation that lasts up to 12 hours. Clinique’s Global Colour Artist, Jenna Menard gives the following three ways to wear Quickliner for Eyes Intense that will look a treat on pretty much anyone:
1. Layer and smudge it under your favourite eye shadow to create a strong yet wearable eye look.
2. To use the liner as a bold cream shadow, smudge it all over the lid and blend using your fingertip. Then reapply close to the lash line for added definition and depth.
3. For a simple bold liner look, wear alone applying the liner close to the lash line with no smudging. To perfect and sharpen the line, use a pointed or extra fine cotton bud tip.
It’s also available in six vibrant shades ranging from deep black, charcoal and brown to a beautiful midnight blue, rich plum and vibrant green, so there is plenty of reason to invest in more than one! I’m off to Mercedes Benz Australian Fashion Week next week and will definitely have a couple of these in my kit for a multitude of looks. Get yours this Monday!

Bringing out the big guns: Louise Gray Skin Care

There are some major innovations hitting the beauty marketplace of late, many of which are seriously hi tech and eliciting some amazing results in the area of anti-ageing. Previously only available to the rich and famous, some of the best new tools are now within reach of the average person, and are often well worth a go if you’re considering a major overhaul of your skin. I for one am in love with the marvellous little beast at Louise Gray Skin Care known as the bt-nano. I’ve been having a course of ½ hour treatments with this tiny wonder at the Ponsonby Road beauty spot and have to say that the effects - as well as the science behind it – have me convinced that it really can make a serious difference to the skin. So - what is it? And how does it work? The human skin gives the ideal bio network from which to create a metaphor for living in equilibrium. Maintaining proper barrier function of the skin is a bit like running a business, a household, an educational facility, and homeland security all at once. The interdependent and interrelated parts need cultivation, nourishment, discipline, investment, and protection. If one component is out of balance, it affects all other systems. If the skin is not fed properly, given adequate protection, or in general is neglected, we surely recognize the signs, and do what it takes to restore balance and re-establish skin health. The solution to staying in balance is maintenance and meeting your skin’s changing needs, and Louise Gray believes that you can do both with the aid of the bt-nano. The bt-nano utilises microcurrent, which is an extremely low level of electricity that mirrors the body's own natural electrical impulses. bt-nano's microcurrent acts as an external source of energy that the body can use to accelerate, and is a non-surgical, non-invasive cosmetic technique that safely and effectively improves the health and appearance of the skin. It utilises technologies developed in the medical and physiotherapy fields to activate the skin's natural chemicals responsible for health and vitality, and can do all many of good for all types of skins. A microcurrent treatment can be used to improve muscle tone in face and neck, lift jowls and eyebrows, reduce and eliminate fine lines and wrinkles, improve facial circulation, lymphatic drainage, product penetration, and much more, all in just a half an hour appointment once or twice a week. Clinical studies have shown that after twenty days of treatment collagen production increases by 14 per cent, elastin increases by 48 per cent, and blood circulation increases by 38 per cent, which is definitely no mean feat! Because everyone’s skin is unique, the skin magicians (and I don’t use that term lightly) at Louise Gray Skin Care incorporate the non-invasive microcurrent methods using the bt-nano with Dermalogica skincare products to enhance your overall wellness. These facial treatments are completely customised for your skin type and skin condition, and each time I’ve visited I’ve experienced a very different line up of add ons depending on what my skin’s needs are on that particular day. I’ve tried them as part of a one-hour facial and as ½ hour “drop in”-style treatments, depending on how much time I’ve got to invest in my skin that week. As I write this I’m on treatment number five and have to say that my skin is looking pretty transformed and feeling super hydrated – and a time of seasonal change when I usually experience the most dryness and sensitivity. Incredible stuff, and highly recommended.

In love with: Kimi Organic Moisturising Body Wash

In case you’re wondering why I’ve been so quiet over the past few days – go on, you know you have - I was wallowing in fabulousness at Chintamani Resort & Spa in Bali, and lived to tell the tale! It was pure heaven – but that’s another story – and one of the products that I took with me that heightened that joy was Kimi Organic Moisturising Body Wash. A great way to keep skin nourished from top to toe, it’s an ultra creamy, really rather gorgeous body cleanser that is super mild and non-irritating – even on sensitive skin like mine – as it’s soap-free. It contains organic shea butter and organic sunflower oil, which are both rich in a variety of vitamins that help to replenish and moisturise the skin. Add to that organic peppermint oil and organic rose otto oil to leave the skin stimulated and refreshed and you really do have the perfect way to kick-start the day. When I wasn’t in the spa this was an ideal way to bring the spa to my bathroom, which is no mean feat. And if that’s not enough reason to check out this and other members of the Kimi Organic Skincare family, the company has pledged as part of their campaign to Plant a Tree For Life in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest for every one of their products sold, and all Kimi Organic products contain 100 per cent plant-based ingredients, are 95 per cent certified organic and Vegan Society UK registered. Get one now – your skin and your senses will thank you for it!

Love it: new from Kevin Murphy, FULL.AGAIN

I confess to being a huge fan of Australian super stylist Kevin Murphy and his simply beautiful hair products, so it’s no surprise that I’m already in love with his latest and greatest release: FULL.AGAIN.
Not to be confused with a volumiser, this pretty puppy is a thickening lotion in the form of a weightless cream featuring rayon particles and moisturisers. Formulated for fine to medium hair, the rayon fibres adhere to natural keratin particles on hair, resulting in greater volume and thickness. How exactly? Well, these clever fibres pretty much create an invisible, thickened surface to make fine hair look and act like thick hair, while still allowing for natural movement and body, without tackiness. Meanwhile, the product’s other ingredients remove toxins from the hair while sealing in moisture, for a soft, silky, thick-looking finish.
Aside from thickening agents, FULL.AGAIN includes natural ingredients for hair health and moisture including: elemi, an essential oil which treats and heals damaged hair; amyris oil, which removes toxins from the hair and is known to have anti-aging and anti-stress properties; and sandalwood oil, a powerful moisturizer for hair and scalp. In addition, lime extract cleanses hair and removes excess oils, while beeswax seals in moisture and protects hair. Too good!
To use, apply to the ends and mid-lengths of damp hair before styling and watch it do its work. And never fear – the lotion washes out completely to avoid any possibility of damage from build up.

In love with: The Exercise Room – a fitness studio with a difference

For the last few weeks I’ve been boosting my exercise where I can by supplementing my usual Pilates and spin classes with some good old-fashioned weights. I’m not a fan of most gyms - especially when they are so big I lose my way for ten minutes just trying to find my locker – but the beautifully boutique Parnell spot known as the The Exercise Room is right up my alley.
Like many busy people, Exercise Room owner Jane Wilson knew that she wanted more from her gym, but was unsure how to go about finding it. Taking matters into her own hands, in 2004 she opened her boutique fitness studio, and eight years on the concept is still a rarity in the Auckland gym world today. The statuesque blonde is the perfect example of the kind of people that seek out her gym too – committed to home, work and family and in need of essential “me” time wherever she can get it.
The private Akaroa Street gym is open 24 hours a day and unique in several very important respects – all of which mean a much better experience for their members. Membership is kept very small so there is a sincere focus on personalised attention and no crowding, and instead of unskilled floor staff, they only admit experienced, highly qualified personal trainers. Each of their personal trainers has ten years plus experience, and many have additional backgrounds in the likes of physiotherapy and osteopathy so you know that every client’s wellbeing is paramount.
I’ve been training with Luke Barwell, who has in just a few weeks’ time managed to already make a change to how I look and feel. I’m committed to sticking to a regular check in with him over the next few months too, as winter is where I often slip up and spend a little too much time clutching a hearty glass of Pinot on the couch!
If you like the idea of a gym with 24-hour swipe card access, free undercover car parking right by the door, individual bathroom suites and 5-star service then I heartily recommend you check out this perfectly private spot. Come summer your bod will thank you for it!

In love with: the new Karen Murrell lipstick collection

A couple of weeks ago I had the good fortune of sitting down for a coffee with New Zealand’s Natural Lipstick Queen, AKA the lovely Karen Murrell.
After launching her eponymous skincare range a couple of years ago she decided to solely concentrate on her first love – the essential tool known as lipstick – and expanded on her original offering of five classic shades with the arrival or four scorchingly hot new hues. The four new colours compliment her already internationally successful colour palette, and I was excited to hear that she will be launching several more before the year is out.
The new babies are Carnation Mist (a beautiful, soft rose petal pink), Fuschia Shock (a head turning hot pink), Coral Dawn (an on trend tangerine) and Sand Storm, a sandy nude that Murrell calls with a laugh her “totally Kardashian shade”. Each is rich in natural high pigment which I love, is long wearing, and won’t feather. Karen adds that “to apply the brighter shades to your lips, use your fingers to press in the colour. The heat of your fingers fixes the pigment and creates a more natural finish,” a technique I often employ that is a total winner!
Hailed as ‘vegetarian lipsticks’, the range has no animal based materials or testing and uses ingredients like
Avocado Oil to provide moisture, nourishment and hydration, and cinnamon to plump. Oh and last but by no means least, each lippy canister is housed in a 100 per cent recyclable and renewable box made from New Zealand trees and includes soya ink based print. And even the canisters are biodegradable – once buried, they compost and return to mother earth within 100 days!

Beauty news: Living Nature celebrates 25 years au natrel

One of the first “natural” beauty brands I ever came into contact with many years ago, this month sees Living Nature celebrates 25 years of ageless fabulousness – with one eye on the planet the whole time.
When I first heard about its innovative and high performance, all good collection I was shocked to hear that it was created right here on our fair shores, and I’m proud to report that it still is. And while theirs is a story of sustainable innovation and a holistic and transparent approach to growth, it is also the story of products that quite simply, work.
From the cottage industry founded by natural skincare pioneer Suzanne Hall in 1987 - when creams were hand stirred in her kitchen - Living Nature has progressed to become world leader in natural beauty innovation but remains honest, safe and authentic… and still based in the Far North town of Kerikeri!
It’s also still created in the original Kerikeri facility that Suzanne moved into after she outgrew her kitchen bench, which uses only carbon-neutral hydro, wind energy, and filtered rainwater. Living Nature’s uncompromising standards have gained them international attention, even earning natural certification from BDIH Germany (the world’s strictest certification body) and champion status in the Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database. The fully recyclable packaging is free from harmful phthalates and Bisphenol-A (BPA), while the formulas harness the bioactive power of New Zealand’s native plants to nourish, purify and heal skin.
To celebrate this impressive 25-year milestone, Living Nature has launched the Ultra Rich Body Cream that I recently reviewed – and highly recommended! The luxurious little number - packed with extreme nourishing properties - represents the accumulation of Living Nature’s 25 years of expertise, as an ideal complete treat for body beautiful, with an ethos of 100% natural.
Happy birthday Living Nature, and here’s to another 25 years!

All about: Stila's rather clever One Step Correct

If they call superstar facialist Kate Somerville the “Goddess of Glow”, then I believe that Chris Devlin from the Ponsonby Mecca Cosmetica store just might be the closest I’ll ever get to a personal god of the same, expertly mixing up a cocktail of clever formulations to prep my skin each and every time he does my makeup (I know, lucky me!).
I popped in a couple of days ago for a turn in the chair before a photo shoot, and once again spent my time quizzing him about what he was using and why (and for the record, I left looking like I had my own lighting crew). He pulled out some amazing new products I’d never seen before, one of which can be seen above – Stila’s One Step Correct.
It might look more like a DNA sample, but it’s actually a silicone-free primer, colour corrector, brightener, and anti-aging skincare serum all in one little wonder. The innovative, triple-swirled helix serum instantly colour corrects, brightens and covers skin imperfections for a flawless face with no fuss, and the seemingly weightless, creamy formula blended imperceptibly into my skin without clogging pores or settling into my fine lines.
It’s the newest addition to Stila's One Step category, which is set to include even more innovative products as time goes on. Chris is a huge fan of Stila Creator and Makeup Artist Jeanine Lobell, who he says is “really intent unveiling some unique new products that will take the brand to a whole new level.” If this clever product is anything to go by then that is super exciting news indeed!

The Top Five for Winter by Lucy Vincent-Marr

My Go To Girl more often than not when I have a question about beauty, Lucy Vincent-Marr is a pint-sized oracle when it comes to hair and skincare. She also oversees the careful edit of skincare, makeup, hair and lifestyle product options that are available in her salons, Powder Rooms and The Marr Lab, and I sat down with her over a lunch of gyoza to get her Top Five Essentials for the cooler months.
Drum roll please… the all-fabulous, all-necessary line up is:

Lypo-Spheric Vitamin C
“This is a unique new form of Vitamin C made by encapsulating Vitamin C
in tiny spheres of essential phospholipids known as Liposomes. It’s in a gel form and works faster than any Vitamin C I’ve ever tried, it’s incredibly potent and behaves in a completely unique way in your body that gets rid of a sore throat in literally, half a day.”

Osmosis Polish
“This gently exfoliates the surface layer of your skin and allows all of the lipids to remain intact while ensuring that your moisturisers and serums penetrate that much further. It uses gentle cranberry and protein enzymes, and also protects your newly refreshed skin with potent antioxidants.”

Sans Goji Cleansing Oil (pictured)
“This is amazing, and its pH is absolutely perfect for the skin. It’s an oil-based cleansing formulation that removes all bacteria and dirt but leaves your skin feeling incredibly silky with no oily residue.”

Sodashi Body Balance Bath Salts
“In Winter you spend a lot more time in the bath, and these help you detoxify as well as relax. They are mineral rich Himalayan Crystal Salts that stimulate circulation and relieve stress and fatigue. You can use them as an exfoliant or pour 1 to 2 tablespoons into your bath.”

Sans Bio active Body Exfoliator
“This uses ultra-fine bamboo granules, organic Shea Butter, Vitamin E and Goji Berry to boost hydration, minimise pores and plump skin by reducing transepidermal water loss.
It removes the dead surface layer of your skin to allow better penetration of hydrating ingredients and reduces irritation.”

Must have: M.A.C Prep + Prime Skin Smoother

I adore the look of velvety smooth, matte skin, which is harder to achieve than it sounds! Especially when you live with high humidity like I do, and your skin is on the combination side of things.
The powers-that-be at M.A.C however, must have heard my prayers, as on counter now is the truly remarkable Prep + Prime Skin Smoother.
A creamy, balmy primer, it aims to “create the perfect canvas for foundation and other face makeup products by softening imperfections, filling lines to reduce the look of wrinkles by 28% and providing a silky, matte finish”. Thank you M.A.C! To maintain the skin’s smoothness and natural barrier, it also includes a beneficial blend of sandalwood extract, bark extract, barley extract, coffee arabica seed oil and Hydrolyzed Yeast Protein. Add to that a blend of peptides to boost skin smoothness and help improve collagen production and you have one clever wee balm. And it’s incredibly portable due to its compact nature, hurrah for that!
The magical primer was tested backstage during three seasons of Fashion Week and almost immediately the M·A·C Pro Team fell in love with the concept, with Senior Artist Luc Bouchard describing it as “my real life ‘photoshop’”!
You can apply Prep + Prime Skin Smoother Compact over moisturiser and under foundation or powder, or to refresh, mattify, or smooth your makeup by lightly stippling or pressing the product over your T-zone or anywhere that needs it.
It can also be worn alone to refine, diminish imperfections and pores, and smooth the texture of skin. Heaven in a compact this may be…

Why you need: Absolute Essential Scar Solution Spray

I defy you to find a woman who hasn’t ranted and raved at some point about a scar that just won’t go, often somewhere obvious that drives them nuts every time they see it. There are a plethora of products on the market claiming to heal and obliterate your average scar, but many of them contain all manner of nasty chemical compounds with side-effects a hell of a lot more unattractive than the skin they aim to treat.
Not so Absolute Essential’s Scar Solution, which is nothing but goodness from the first drop. Developed as part of a private consultation with a car crash victim, it offers possibly the most intense concentration of super-food skin oils available today. Applied daily over a period of three months to already formed Keloid scaring, the exceptional botanical blend supported a natural reduction of raised scar tissue from half a centimeter to flatness. This is great news for many people who find out that cosmetic surgery generally only offers a 50 per cent chance of success against recurring Keloid scars.
The pristine organic ingredients within it that work so beautifully together represent a supreme selection of the most therapeutic, nutrient-packed plant oils known to date. With regular application, the fragile skin is fed and kept supple and protected, while integrating molecular compounds promote healthy blood flow for increased nutrition and effective natural healing. It pretty much helps your body to heal itself in the most optimum way possible, which is no mean feat!
For best results, apply it to the newly closed wound every day, followed by a gentle pressure bandage for Keloid scars to encourage flattening.

In love with: the all new Guerlain 'Noir G' Mascara

A few weeks ago I popped down to the water-side Mantell’s venue on Auckland’s harbour to hear all about the latest releases from Guerlain – one of the first makeup and perfume houses that I became aware of as a teenager, and one of France’s most iconic brands. As much tied up with notions of pure Gallic chic as Chanel and Yves St. Laurent, it is a name that is synonymous with luxury.
As can it’s newest mascara release, the truly extraordinary Noir G. This sleek black beauty is the first mascara to combine the extravagant luxury of a jewel case with a mirror and an extraordinary formula that adds volume, lengthens and curls. It has super charged, ultra-black pigments that create perfectly defined eyes without any risk of smearing, smudging or clumping, whilst a fortifying agent helps to regenerate lashes by stimulating keratin for fortification and lash growth. Like a magic wand, the ground breaking Noir G goes one step further with a refillable applicator, making it convenient and easy to switch to a new wand as soon as you need it. Pull on the case and with a click, the hidden mirror is revealed. Add a quick twist and the brush appears, ready to create exceptional, stunning lashes. Love it!
Die-hard mascara obsessives like me will go nuts for this reinvention of the one beauty staple that’s been given every makeover possible - false-lash effect! Vibrating wands! Wrapped and spiralled bristles! Does everything but the dishes!
Not only does Noir G perform at its best - full dimension, robust volume, healthier lashes through regeneration, and a long-lasting formula – it also comes in a sleek, metallic, jewel-like case with mirror AND is refillable. Guerlain has gone green while looking thoroughly fabulous – that my kind of recycling!
My next Guerlain want is a bottle of the all-new Shalimar, which smells like pure heaven at first sniff. The reformulated incarnation of the classic scent loses none of the exoticism and charm that drew me in when I first made an acquaintance with it many years ago, and I think I’m set fall in love all over again!
