Beauty essentials: Top of the (sun) blocks

Finally we’re seeing a little sun of late, which for me is a reminder that summer is - maybe? I hope? - on its way and new sunscreen needs to go on the shopping list. Whenever I’ve asked beauty experts – be they dermatologists, make up artists or cosmetic surgeons – for their pick when it comes to anti ageing skincare, they all agree that the most important thing you can do to keep your skin looking good well into old age is wear a sunscreen. Daily. No arguments, no forgetting on a cloudy day, no saying, “my olive complexion is a sunblock in itself”! Most last twelve months max after being opened too, so if you’re still got some sitting around in your beach bag or glove box from this time last year then chuck it - ASAP!

One formula I have fallen for lately is Cosmedix Reflect, which combines a high performance sunblock with skin-loving ingredients. A physical, oil-free, spray-dispensed sunscreen that won’t clog pores and is gentle enough for even the most sensitive and oil-prone skin types, it provides broad-spectrum UV protection that absorbs quickly leaving a matte finish. Whilst it’s protecting your skin a combination of science and botanical ingredients help firm things and smooth lines, whilst free radical-fighting antioxidants defend skin from environmental stress that can cause inflammation and damage to collagen and elastin. Pretty impressive stuff! It is also formulated free of petroleum-based oils so it nourishes without clogging pores, and for those with severe gluten sensitivities or Dermatitis Herpetiformis, rest assured Reflect is gluten free. Oh and one thing – don’t spray this directly onto your face but rather into your hands first  - and keep well away from eyes. For stockists phone 0800 238 754.

Next up is my regular COOLA rave, one of the suncare brands that I definitely recommend for the whole family. A beautifully packaged collection of organic sun essentials produced out of Southern California, the COOLA range includes a plethora of yummy products that are high performance yet delicate and kind on the environment. It is produced in limited quantity batches, meaning that the range can be reformulated often, taking advantage of new developments in sun science and labelling regulations almost as they happen.
The COOLA range has two distinct organic sunscreen collections to choose from: Mineral, and Classic, each based on different active ingredients. The Classic Sunscreens use organic active ingredients (commonly referred to as “chemicals”), while the Mineral Sunscreens use mineral (“physical”) active ingredients like Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide to scatter and reflect UVA/UVB rays. The mineral sunscreens are effective right after application, making them perfect for the whole family. I cannot rave enough about the brand’s beautifully scented, high performance Guava Mango Sunscreen Spray SPF50. It doesn’t get much easier than spritzing your sunscreen on the go, and this clear, continuous spray in an all natural Guava Mango scent is one of the most effective products I have ever used. Offering broad spectrum SPF 50 protection, the deluxe, eco-sized “Farm to Face” sourced spray nourishes and hydrates the skin with more than 70 per cent certified organic ingredients like Cucumber, Algae and Strawberry Extracts. I was mainly testing it whilst lying prone in a lounger, cocktail in hand, but it’s actually formulated for the rigorous demands of sport and is water resistant for 80 minutes. This means you really can have your fun in the sun and then some! I love that it contains no nano-sized particles and comes in a deluxe size, which for $59.00 will definitely go a long way. For stockists go to www.beautycare.co.nz.
Next up, we all love easy – and when it comes to remembering to put on sunblock, the easier the better. Sunscreen as we know it can be a hassle to incorporate into your everyday routine, especially if you are only spending short periods of time in the sun. This is where BRUSH ON BLOCK comes in, a rather conveniently packaged and compact on-the-go mineral SPF30 sunscreen. It is basically a translucent powder that can be worn under or on top of makeup (that won’t leave skin greasy or with a white residue) that comes in an easy to use, all-in-one dispensing brush. While it is suitable for areas that are exposed to the sun such as the face, neck and hands, it is also perfect for application to the hairline, part lines and for those with thinning hair to provide protection from the sun without the greasiness of a traditional sunscreen. It is great for days at the beach as it is sweat and water resistant for up to 80 minutes and perfect for teenagers who play outdoor sports, so quick and easy to apply. When you are running out the door in a hurry this is a lifesaver, and it is paraben, phthalate and PABA-free, vegan and gentle enough for children and those with sensitive skin. For stockist details phone 0800 204 526.

Last up, one for parents who know the sandy kids scenario well - Garnier Ambre Solaire Easy Peasy Kids Anti-Sand Spray. It is the first advanced SPF 50+ kids sun protection from the European suncare brand with a sand repelling action, absolute magic! Waiting for little bodies to dry is also now a thing of the past thanks to their Easy Peasy Kids Wet Skin Lotion, which provides direct application to wet skin without sacrificing sun protection. Both hypoallergenic and water resistant formulas have been tested under paediatric control and contain no perfume and no colourants, so these are a great choice for sensitive types at any age too.

Beauty news: Kiehl’s opens in Westfield Riccarton, Christchurch

Since the opening of its original apothecary in New York City in 1851, Kiehl’s has become a globally renowned name in the skincare industry for serving its customers the finest formulations made with the most advanced skincare science and uniquely efficacious, natural ingredients. The customer has always been central to Kiehl’s, inspiring each and every company decision from development to sampling to service philosophy - and even the design of Kiehl’s store.
Today, Kiehl’s opened the doors to its newest New Zealand location - a Westfield Riccarton boutique. The store is located on Level 1 next to Cotton On Kids, and a shot of the fit out can be seen above.
Kiehl’s retail stores are inspired by the company’s 165 year heritage and a desire to offer an experiential customer journey. Each store around the world transports the customer to the original pharmacy while simultaneously offering the opportunity for customer discovery and learning. Their flagship Auckland store in the Britomart Precinct is one of my favourite local beauty destinations, and it is super busy with good reason. Kiehl’s is all about its loyal customer base, and I swear in just one visit you’ll be hooked too.
“Quality is a defining characteristic of our company, but so is discovery,” says Cheryl Vitali, Kiehl’s General Manager, Worldwide. “It is our goal to put Kiehl’s New York apothecary heritage, history of innovation, highly personalized customer service and generosity in the hands of our customers across the globe. The Kiehl’s retail store brings these company values to our customers in an immersive, inviting environment.”
To translate the original Kiehl’s apothecary into new markets around the world, each material, design element and artefact has been meticulously chosen for a total immersion in the beautiful heritage brand. Traditional textures like warm wood, marble accents and vintage brass meet modern lab elements including glass and stainless steel. Beakers, test tubes and mortar & pestles celebrate Kiehl’s pharmacy traditions and original hand-made formulations. And true to its East Village roots, a New York attitude permeates every store, through eclectic design elements like neon lighting, wall murals, graffiti, and exposed brick walls.
“From the minute a customer enters the store we want them to feel welcomed, in an unexpected way. It’s common to see new customers exploring the store, opening our books, inspecting Mr. Bones, perusing our vintage photographs, all before ever looking for a skincare product,” shares Maria Gustafson, Kiehl’s Senior Vice President of Global Creative and Retail Store Design. “Our stores tell a story about our history and our formulas all while creating an environment for customers to comfortably focus on their own distinct skincare needs. This is very unique to Kiehl’s.”
Personalised skincare consultations, delivered by highly trained Kiehl’s Customer Service Representatives (KCRs) are a hallmark of the company’s commitment to service, and the new store will be no different. As they have since the 1970s, KCRs wear a white lab coat – a continued celebration of the Kiehl’s authentic pharmacy heritage and their skincare expertise.
So what are you waiting for? If you’re in the ‘hood make haste to Kiehl’s new Westfield Riccarton boutique - you won't be disappointed!

Christmas countdown: NARS X Sarah Moon holiday collection

I recently wrote about one amazing photographer-meets-beauty-company collab and then by golly, another perfect combination hits me straight between the eyes. It’s the NARS X Sarah Moon Holiday 2016 Color Collection, and it’s pretty damn flawless.
While most beauty companies are launching pretty standard Christmas collections for 2016, the majestic NARS went one step further with something very special. Taking their fans completely by surprise, the company launched the Sarah Moon for NARS Holiday 2016 Color Collection, which brings one of fashion’s most distinctive but enigmatic photography talents to a new audience.
The talented Moon once worked with Guy Bourdin, and her style is as distinctive, if less well known than her legendary mentor. For those not familiar with Moon, she came to prominence in the 1980’s and 90’s and her work is magical and ethereal, as well as totally modern.
Together with the brand’s founder, François Nars, Moon conceived and art-directed the range; from the colours to the packaging to the theme for the campaign. The whole shebang was inspired by imagery from the iconic 1927 film, Metropolis and the idea of transparency.
The end result us everything a beauty freak could possibly need… and then some. There's everything from lashes and nail polishes to cheek and eye shadow palettes, as well as some highly desirable lip formulas that I have become increasingly obsessed by. Moon described the process of product development as: “we talked about the idea of a kind of mist around the eyes and worked from there. Nothing too obvious, nothing too strident. Just enhancing the woman’s natural features.” Above all, she said “We wanted to tell a story of an authentic woman. Any makeup she is wearing is never a mask. We really collaborated to find this woman that was delicate, yet strong and always very modern.”
I’ve been lucky enough to have the Look Closer Eyeshadow Palette to play with (below), which is in now at Mecca Cosmetica and Mecca Maxima stores, as well as online at www.meccabeauty.co.nz. It includes four, perfectly neutral but unique eye shadows and a miniature sized eyeliner in the form of Via Veneto, a super dark black with a semi-matte finish. The pencil has semi-opaque colour in just a single pass, and seriously lasts and lasts. It’s the perfect palette for a woman on the go or travel in particular, with almost all the elements for an evening eye in one beautiful package. Love it!
I’m now plotting to get the Fearless Red and Indecent Proposal Lipstick, both of which look about as legendary and wearable as it gets. Highly recommend!

Christmas countdown: Estée Lauder's limited edition Bronze Goddess collection

When the original, highly alluring Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess Eau Fraîche launched onto the market way back in 2011 (I think?), the fragrance had me at the name. It was summer, the layers were falling off and hey – who doesn’t want to be bronzed and fabulous when the heat gets turned up? Lucky for me the fragrance itself was a winner too: a super sensuous, sun-drenched blend of bergamot, warm amber, tiare flower, and vanilla combined with delicious creamy coconut… just heavenly.
Over the years it has appeared in a few limited edition incarnations to be released during the holiday season, and for Summer 2016 there is a duo of Bronze Goddess-scented treats that would make the perfect Christmas presents – to a loved one, or to yourself.
Created around the fragrant cult classic, the limited edition Bronze Goddess Fragrance Collection is described by Lauder as a “multi-sensorial, multi-textural body collection”, and it is a joy from the get-go. It features the iconic Bronze Goddess Eau Fraiche scent, along with a luxuriant Whipped Body Crème for the ultimate feeling of sun-drenched, unabashed sexiness.
An indulgent fragranced layering accessory to the Bronze Goddess fragrance, the Limited Edition Bronze Goddess Whipped Body Crème is a truly luxurious feeling, whipped body crème that has been designed to help soften, revitalise, smooth and replenish moisture. It also makes the Eau last that much longer due to the layering effect, and is beautifully subtle when worn alone. The formula contains a blend of natural oils: Olive Fruit, Grape Seed, Rice Bran and Apricot Kernel, which help to soften and nourish dry skin while infusing it with the sultry Bronze Goddess fragrance scent. Basically: apply this exceptional crème soufflé liberally all over the body, go forth and glow.
The Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess Summer 16 Collection is available right now at Estée Lauder counters nationwide.
The Limited Edition Bronze Goddess Eau Fraiche Skinscent is RRP$143 and the Limited Edition Bronze Goddess Whipped Body Creme RRP$116.

Love it: Jo Malone London Christmas 2016

With a yearly advent calendar that comes with quite the price tag yet sells out before it’s even hit the shelves and a plethora of goodies to obsess about, it’s safe to say that the Jo Malone London brand owns Christmas. No Christmas countdown would be complete without a shout out to the wonderful brand, whose stores and fragrances fill me with utter delight every time!
As well as being purveyors of simply beautiful, luxurious fragrances, Jo Malone is also the place to go for a very special experiential treat – one I first experienced last year at their Britomart, Auckland store. They offer complimentary personalised Fragrance Combining consultations all year round at their in-store Tasting Bar, which include a luxurious hand and arm massage and fragrance samples. It’s the perfect introduction to the brand for those who haven’t experienced its unabashed gorgeousness, as well as a treat for their customers and a chance to explore the possibilities of fragrance combination. The combos I discovered in just under an hour were inspired and totally original - it was like walking out with a wardrobe of new scents, just by playing with my existing favourites! The store can host up to three customers at a time at the Tasting Bar (bookings essential) – making it the perfect outing when celebrating a birthday or special occasion – and also offer parties of up to 15 a private evening in the store complete with canapés and champagne upon arrangement. To say the whole process would be a true treat would definitely be an understatement – these need to be experienced to be believed!
But back to the seasonal tip - their Christmas gift options are always coveted, and this year is no different. Back in October I attended a lunch event was held in celebration of their Christmas 2016 product launch, known as 'The Theatre of Christmas'. The setting was flawless and definitely Instagrammable, and it was a beautiful introduction to their seasonal line up consisting of new products along with the return of some old favourites.

First and foremost, there’s a delicious new limited edition cologne in store for Christmas called Orange Bitters (RRP 228), which you’ll love if you’re drawn to grown up citrus scents with a bit of a sultry edge.  It’s a brand new scent and the first ever Christmas cologne from Jo Malone London a far as I know, and comes presented in a harlequin-style, checked print bottle which follows the same design as the whole collection. It’s limited edition, very sophisticated and apparently great combined with Pomegranate Noir, one of the brand’s most popular scents ever. To accompany it is the beautiful Orange Bitters candle (RRP $365), which comes in a ceramic-lidded vessel and is destined to be loved long after the tinsel has been packed away.
Other picks of mine from the vast Jo Malone London Christmas 2016 collection include the always-giftable Cologne Intense Collection of five 9ml minis (RRP $235), the Christmas Cracker (RRP $90), the terribly Christmassy but sophisticated Pine & Eucalyptus Home Candle (RRP $115) and the Mimosa & Cardamom and Pomegranate Noir Collections (RRP $205) of travel-sized favourites in the popular scent.

But really, you have to experience it all to believe it – so head to your nearest Jo Malone London counter now… and Merry Christmas!

Christmas countdown: Giorgio Armani Si Le Parfum

One of my top picks for gifting when it comes to the one you love – or the want you want to love you – is fragrance, and that goes for both sexes. Yes it can be hard to align your purchase with someone’s signature scent wardrobe, but when you nail it by god you impress!
A recent fragrance release for women that I have fallen in love with of late is Si Le Parfum by Giorgio Armani, the newest incarnation of Giorgio Armani Parfums’ original Si, whichSi launched in 2013. In a very short time, the collection offered numerous new versions of the original edition, as well as limited flacons with the original juice, and the latest version is one of my most favourite yet.
Its creators call it “sober yet luxurious”, and it is as elegant and classy as its spokesmodel, the ever-radiant style chameleon, Cate Blanchett. A truly modern Chypre Floral fragrance, the nose behind this beauty is Julie Masse, the woman also responsible for the ultra feminine Si Rose Signature. I think it has way more depth than that version of Si though, with top notes of bergamot and black currant to keep things earthed. The middle notes are jasmine, osmanthus and incense (which I love); whilst base notes are patchouli leaf, amber, vanilla and benzoin. Think: a nod to the legacy of traditional high perfumery, with more than a little sensuality thrown into its beautifully hidden depths.
I love the almost eighties feel of the Sì Le Parfum bottle, which the team behind it say is a tribute to “haute parfumerie” and its precious bottles from another time, while remaining steeped in pure modernity. The fragrance can be seen clearly through the bottle, and its soft, amber-y pink shade is just perfect all on its own. The cap looks like a drop of onyx encased in glass, giving it a retro vibe that connects the past with the future in a really rather perfect way. I for one think it would be a welcome addition to any bedside table.
Giorgio Armani Si Le Parfum is available now from selected pharmacies, Farmers and department stores, RRP $259 for 40ml. Beautiful, and just perfect for Christmas!

Beauty news: YSL Beauty signs Staz Lindes as their newest ambassador

Yves Saint Laurent has always had a knack for signing preternaturally cool women to star in their campaigns over the years, and the brand has soared like a very stylish eagle as a result. Think a heavy lidded Kate Moss, saucy Sophie Dahl, Cara Delevingne wearing nothing but a jacket and, during the infamous Hedi Slimane's time, models playing rock stars on a daily basis.
Their latest signing is no different: the iconic house announced earlier today that 24-year-old musician, model and photographer Staz Lindes is the new face of Yves Saint Laurent Beauty. If you haven’t heard of her before then you definitely will now, as her face will be in the pages of every style mag worth it salt from here on in.
Born and raised in Venice Beach, Lindes has that cool-girl vibe down pat, with loads of Cali attitude mixed with Parisian rock chick sass for one hell of a killer style combination. She even comes with genuine rock n’ roll cred: her dad is Dire Straits guitarist Hal Lindes, and her own band The Paranoyds have been profiled in i-D.
Her perfect pout has been chosen to introduce Yves Saint Laurent's newest launch, Tint in Balm, to the world, but for now her favourite pick from the YSL Beauty line up is reportedly their ever-so-slightly louche and sexy Couture Kajal Eyeliner (below). One of my own favourite beauty products, it is ultra-pigmented and ultra-versatile and takes the form of a three-in-one eyeliner, kohl and smoky eye shadow. Perfect for those late night, French girl vibes so synonymous with the YSL brand.
When Vogue asked Lindes what Yves Saint Laurent meant to her she said: “It’s historic and iconic. I feel a part of history… YSL has always been the symbol of the Parisian woman to me”. She says that during her high school years, “I'd copy the style of French actresses from the 60s - the very actresses that M Saint Laurent had dressed.”
Yves Saint Laurent Beauty is known for its youthful, cool, edgy and luxurious vibe, and I for one think that Lindes will most definitely do them proud.

All about: the Bobbi Brown Remedies collection

I am an absolute sucker for apothecary-style packaging for skin and body formulas, so I was always destined to fall head over heels for Bobbi Brown’s new Remedies collection.
Made up of a selection of targeted skincare solutions, Remedies was reportedly inspired by the firm's holistic approach to beauty and they look just perfect. Combining beauty and wellness, the petite collection of six skin enhancing treatments has been designed to target specific skincare needs and enhance the complexion and is due out January 2017.
Each of the "superblend" concentrates is applied in the form of drops, twice a day. Each product can be used individually or together and can be layered with a moisturiser or even, foundation.
From dehydration, irritation and damage from external factors to excess sebum, the new range caters to the needs of all skin types and tackles specific day-to-day skincare problems.
To begin, Bobbi Brown has developed three concentrates to “improve vitality”, boost hydration and strengthen the structure of skin. Skin Reviver (N°91) is a potent green blend of green algae, Brussels sprouts and spinach that refreshes unhealthy, tired or damaged skin for a brighter, plumper complexion. Skin Moisture Solution (N°86), based on hyaluronic acid and mineral waters, promises intense hydration and restored suppleness for parched, uncomfortable skin. Skin Fortifier (N°93), a rich blend of lipids, helps strengthen skin that has lost vitality and resistance to help fend off future damage.
Next up is a Skin Relief (N°80) concentrate, formulated with red algae and algae extracts to calm sensitive skin prone to redness and irritation, while the Skin Clarifier (N°75) for pore and oil control is a mix of emollient oils and salicylic acid to unclog pores and regulate sebum levels.
The final product in the Remedies line is the Skin Salve (N°57) balm, which differs in texture to the concentrated treatment drops and feels incredible on the skin. Formulated with shea butter, beeswax, and extracts of turmeric and licorice, the balm repairs, protects and nourishes skin and is my pick for times of seasonal change, harsh cold winters and long haul flights. It is perfect for chapped, super dry spots and has an earthy scent to remind you that it’s doing good, and should be used at night for optimal healing.
"Remedies is the perfect fusion of beauty and wellness - it’s the ultimate skin enhancer,” says Bobbi herself, and the Remedies range aims to establish a firm connection between your body, your mind, and your spirit. In Bobbi’s words, “eating right and exercising is more important than what you put on your face," to which I say "hell yes!" These treatments are envisioned as energy boosters for the skin with a goal to enhance skin’s overall health, instead of masking its flaws. How can anyone argue with that?

Christmas countdown: Clinique Happy Gelato Creams for Body

During the summer months wearing your favourite perfume can be a bit of hard ask, especially when you’re reluctant to coat yourself in the stuff due to the rising temps or spending time in the sun when scents can turn (and irritate the skin). The perfect choice is a body cream or lotion in your favourite scent, with an unrivalled selection of body lotions, body oils, creams and more available from some pretty special brands swooping in to save the day. They are also a great option for gifting as they are a little less pricey than perfume, and you can rest easy knowing that you’ve helped out a buddy most likely in need of hydration for dry, summer skin.
Keeping with the summer theme, one of my top picks in this area is the collection of delicious Gelato Creams for Body by Clinique. The range offers three moisturising body creams that soothe and condition dry skin and have the most lovely creamy, whipped sensation as well as much-needed moisturising ingredients. They come lightly fragranced with the Happy Indulgences Collection of happy (naturally), floral, and fruit scents.
The full fragrant line up is:
Happy Gelato Cream for Body
This tub of gorgeous comes with the scent of Clinique’s best-selling women’s fragrance Happy, but in an indulgent body cream. The super rich body cream provides instant moisturisation while imparting top notes comprised of sparkling citrus, with a floral blend of West Indian Mandarin Flower, Boysenberry Bush and Melati Blossoms and their complementary opposites of Spring Mimosa, Morning Dew Orchid and Hawaiian Wedding Flower completing the picture. It’s a vibrant scent and a perfect pick for Happy fans.
Sugared Petals Gelato Cream for Body
This decadently rich body cream conditions while soothing skin. Opening with top notes of neroli blossom, bergamot, and orange, which lead into middle notes of jasmine absolute and gardenia, and blend with cedarwood, white musk, and sandalwood, creating harmonious blends of colours, scents, and textures.
Berry Blush Gelato Cream for Body
Soothing and conditioning from the moment it touches skin, the joyful fruit scent of Berry Blush opens with a citrus flair of top notes mandarin, raspberry, and mango blossom. The fruity opening complements floral middle notes freesia, violet, and peony. Bottom notes blonde woods, musk, and amber give a sensual undertone to the most complex (I think) scent of the three.
Just gorgeous! Clinique Happy Gelato Creams for Body are available for a limited time at Clinique counters nationwide and at www.smithandcaugheys.co.nz for a suggested retail price of $69.00. So get gifting – including one to self, of course!
