Daily delight: Rihanna for Vogue Arabia

Love it: Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Stick

One of the first foundation formulas that I fell in love with – and used slavishly for years – was a stick, and I swear I went through hundreds of them. As liquid foundation improved with the addition of serums and the like and then cushions arrived, I somehow forgot about my old favourite… until now.
I am officially obsessed with the new Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Stick, and since having one to play with, have barely worn anything else. The versatility of a stick is one of its major pluses, and the portability when it comes to travel and touch ups on the go is equally as awesome. I have been using Teint Idole Ultra Stick for just a light slick of coverage on the cheeks over the weekend, as a full coverage at night, and it’s travelled to Australia with me where it more than performed in temperatures that were a heck of a lot warmer than over here. It really is a little miracle.
In terms of specifics, the Teint Idole Ultra Stick boasts a 24-hour wear, and the highly pigmented formula provides high coverage in a super-gliding, weightless texture for a natural matte finish. Oil-free, it can be used as a foundation, for touch-ups, as a spot concealer, and even to contour., which having only one shade in my kit I haven’t been able to try as yet – but want to!
Its ultra-lightweight powder-crème texture blends smoothly for a traceless, second-skin result, and porous polymers absorb excess oils without leaving a chalky, unflatteringly too matte finish - if you know what I mean. Plus, with ambora extract, it helps to reduce the appearance of redness. It is transfer-resistant and smudge-resistant, and also suitable for all skin types, even sensitive. Amazing.
In New Zealand it’s only available in eight shades thus far, but they are quite universal in spectrum and think they will cover a lot of complexions depending on how thick you like your coverage.
Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Stick is available right now in store, RRP $70.00. What are you waiting for?

Beauty news: two New Jo Malone London boutiques open in Auckland

With a yearly advent calendar that comes with quite the price tag yet sells out before it’s even hit the shelves and a plethora of goodies to obsess about, it’s safe to say that the Jo Malone London brand owns Christmas. No Christmas countdown would be complete without a shout out to the wonderful brand, whose stores and fragrances fill me with utter delight every time!
As well as being purveyors of simply beautiful, luxurious fragrances, Jo Malone is also the place to go for a very special experiential treat – one I first experienced at their Britomart, Auckland store. They offer complimentary personalised Fragrance Combining consultations all year round at their in-store Tasting Bar, which include a luxurious hand and arm massage and fragrance samples. It’s the perfect introduction to the brand for those who haven’t experienced its unabashed gorgeousness, as well as a treat for their customers and a chance to explore the possibilities of fragrance combination
So it with great excitement then that I can share the news that Jo Malone London has announced two new pop-up boutiques open this week in Smith & Caughey’s Newmarket, Auckland and Westfield Albany, Auckland on 30th October 2017. The openings are perfect timing with the rush towards Christmas for fans of the brand, and for those who love fans of the brand (hint, hint!).
The two new destinations, solidify the brand’s popularity with New Zealanders, with Marie-Ann Billens, General Manager, Estée Lauder Companies saying: “We are excited to be opening in Smith & Caughey’s Newmarket; an iconic department store characterised by style and history, as well as Westfield Albany, a landmark retail destination on the North Shore. We are looking forward to opening our pop-up boutiques and introducing The World of Jo Malone.”
Quintessentially British, Jo Malone London is a name synonymous with style, and these two new spaces will absolutely nail that brief.
To celebrate, they will even have their master hand engraver, Dene Gilmore in store to add complimentary engraving with any purchase of a Jo Malone London cologne or candle - with a maximum of three letters per product so no excuse to stay away. Dene will be at:
Smith & Caughey’s Newmarket, 225 Broadway Newmarket:
Saturday 28th October
Westfield Albany, Level 2 (Beside Farmers), 219 Don McKinnon Drive, Albany
Thursday 2nd November
6.00pm - 8.30pm
Head in and get shopping!

Fragrance news: Curionoir unveils Cellar Feels

Midway through last year, luxurious home and beauty brand Curionoir unveiled a range of exquisite handmade perfumes, while simultaneously celebrating the opening of their flagship store on Ponsonby Road. For those unfamiliar with the brand, Curio Noir was founded in 2011 by local creative talent Tiffany Jeans, and has grown into one of Australasia’s most luxurious perfumery and candle ranges. Tiffany crafted a series of hand-cast skull candles individually wrapped in tulle for each guest at her wedding, and it was from this labour of love that the idea for Curio Noir grew.
Darkly alluring and reminiscent of a Parisian atelier, Curio Noir's flagship store is in the space formerly occupied by Wunderkammer at 76a Ponsonby Road, and is a veritable feast for the senses. Within its walls you’ll find the sought after line of Curio Noir glass candles, CN Absolute Parfum, Curio Noir hard soaps and leather coasters, exclusive Zora Bell Boyd jewellery and more.
The Absolute Parfum perfumery line has to be played with to be believed, and is currently made up of several unisex fragrances crafted by Jeans and mixed by perfumers in Grasse, France. Called Opia, Diaphanous, Tobacco Night, Dark Bouquet and Pūrotu Rose, they are now joined by the heady and beautiful Cellar Feels, which may be my most favourite yet.
Inspired by the humble winemaking days of the past, Cellar Feels, is a fruity, leathery fragrance and is in store now. With notes of apple, black tea leaves, orange, Lavendin Super, Mate, nutmeg and grape leaves and undertones of Virginian Cedarwood, Tree Moss and Atlas Cedarwood, Jeans says it was designed to take your senses “to the dark, musty cellar where wine was made with simplicity and memories captured”. It definitely takes me back to my Croatian grandparents’ fragrant basement, and Tiffany says it was her own grandfather that inspired the scent. “I would watch my grandfather spend hours in his cellar under the house concocting different wines,” she says, “and by no means was he a purist. He would experiment with different fruits, skins and techniques. This new scent reflects this tender process; picking the vines; squashing the grapes and other fruit underfoot; pouring the wine into French hand-blown carboys, and tasting of course.”
Made – like all Curionoir parfums - from the finest notes mixed in Grasse, then bottled in store, it is available as both a Curionoir Parfum and Glass Candle fragrance.  The Parfum is available in a 4ml pocket size for $40, a 50ml bottle for $240, or at the flagship store customers can select their own hand-blown, bespoke refillable glass bottle made in collaboration with Monmouth Glass Studio. In the CN Glass candle range, Cellar Feels is presented within beautiful rich copper red hand-blown glass vessels in two sizes, the Classic Glass 390g for $149, and the Demi Glass 85g for $85.
Cellar Feels Parfum and CN Glass are available from exclusive New Zealand and international boutiques, the Curionoir flagship store, 76a Ponsonby Road, Grey Lynn, Auckland, and curionoir.com now.

Beauty news: the return of the M.A.C Liptensity Lipstick collection

When I first heard word about M.A.C Cosmetics’ Liptensity Lipstick collection around this time last year, I was in awe. For starters, at the time I was many stories above Auckland city in The Sugar Club dining room during a storm. And for seconds, I was totally bowled over by the amazing collaboration behind it.
It was developed in association with Maureen Seaberg, a writer on sensory experience and a tetrachromat, which means she has the genetic ability to see shades of colour that the rest of us cannot (to put it mildly). To put a vague number on it, tetrachromats can see up to 100 million colours, estimates suggest, which is 100 times that of the average human. Most people have three cells, or receptors, in their retinas, but tetrachomats have a fourth receptor, which may be what allows for their heightened colour perception. They are usually female, and it’s estimated that about 12 per cent of women carry the gene for this fourth receptor. Carrying the gene doesn’t guarantee that you’ll wind up with heightened colour vision, but those who both have the gene and who are immersed in a wide range of colours from a very young age appear to be more likely to develop the ability. Amazing!
The 24-piece lipstick collection was a revelation, and hugely popular with fans of the brand. As well as being an absolute joy to behold, the shades were totally void of over/undertones and stayed true and rich for up to eight hours with no fading. My favourite is Smoked Almond (below), a shade that just won't quit.
Fast forward to October 23 and the collection is back in nine new and three bring-back shades! It can also now be paired with their new Liptensity Lip Pencils, which are available in 18 equally vivid permanent shades. Amazing. Start saving your pennies!
Liptensity Lipsticks retail for $50.00 and Liptensity Lip Pencils, $48.00.

All about: KERASILK Beautifying Hair Perfumes

We all know that you should never spray your favourite fragrance directly onto your hair – think dryness and damage from the alcohol content, for starters – but some of the most beautiful brands have created hair mists just with that in mind. These include the likes of Jo Malone and also haircare name Goldwell, whose premium range KERASILK now includes a collection of Beautifying Hair Perfumes.
These new hair fragrances combine sophisticated, fine fragrance notes with beautifying hair care benefits, delivering that feeling of freshly washed hair all day, every day. This is a major bonus for those of you who, like me, have long locks that seem to soak up every kebab and cigarette that wafts past on a night out, and the fact that they add touch of shine while preventing static ticks even more boxes for me. I have been playing with a few of the fragrances and find that a little goes a long way, but I soon became addicted.
There are four fragrances in the range, from deeply mysterious exquisite oriental notes to romantic elegant rose accords.  Control is the aforementioned Oriental, whilst Reconstruct is a magnolia and jasmine blend with a hint of patchouli. Repower mixes freesia and lily with a light citrus, while Color blends elegant rose with white musk.
They are suitable for all hair types, and can be used as a finishing spray on dry, already-styled hair or at any time throughout the day when you feel like you need a boost. Pretty cool, huh? Hair perfume may be something you'd never really thought you needed… but then won’t be able to live without.
KERASILK Beautifying Hair Perfumes are available now, exclusively from leading hair salons nationwide. For a list of salons, visit here.

All about: the new Bondi Sands Self Tan Eraser

It’s THAT time of the year when the layers start falling off, so if you’re not working with some kind of tanning product now then I suggest you get to it – stat!
I’m a confessed connoisseur of the faux glow, and have tried pretty much every formulation out there - with varying degrees of success. It is still the safest tan out there for tanning at any time of year, and with New Zealand skin cancer rates constantly on the rise it’s time to pick a formula that works for you rather than baking under what are some pretty damn dangerous rays.
If you’re a fake tan newbie or just reticent about applying them yourself, rest assured that old tans and failed applications can now be erased with a very clever new product from Bondi Sands.
Called simply Bondi Sands Self Tan Eraser, it uses patented new technology that effectively lightens and removes self-tan in just five minutes without the need for harsh scrubbing. That’s right – five minutes! And there isn’t a pumice stone in sight!
The super easy to apply cleansing foam formula contains soothing Aloe-Vera and is both non-abrasive and ultra-gentle on the skin, leaving it looking and feeling as smooth as silk, along with tan-free. The foam is delicate enough to be used on both the face and body too, which gets a big tick from me. Patchy leftovers on the ankles are one thing – when they are on the face and neck it’s quite another.
The new Self Tan Eraser is set to be a global game-changer, meaning mistakes are a thing of the past and there’s no more waiting for the tell-tale signs of tan to fade before you apply a fresh one. With the new Bondi Sands Self Tan Eraser you can simply remove your tan at the desired time and reapply for sun-kissed skin.
For best results, the brand says to apply Bondi Sands Self Tan Eraser to dry skin after at least three days of applying self-tan. You pump the foam applicator firmly and apply liberally to the skin, leaving it on for five minutes. It doesn’t smell great but it’s nowhere near offensive, so step away and busy yourself reorganising your makeup brushes or something equally as annoying-but-necessary, then pop back into a warm shower and start wiping. I tried this with both a flannel and a gentle exfoliating mitt, and found the latter was the best choice for more stubborn or dry areas like the ankles, elbows and knees.
So does it work? You bet, and how. This beauty will be an essential once the summer months arrive, and perfect to keep on hand at the end of a tan and when you have a tanning disaster such as the dreaded orange hands!
Bondi Sands Self Tan Eraser is available now, RRP $24.99.

Beauty news: Adam Levine tapped for YSL's Y US fragrance ambassador

Such a consummate rockstar that he even has a flawless supermodel wife (Behati Prinsloo) and globe trotting lifestyle (see his Instagram, which has 10 million plus followers), Adam Levine has just been named as the US fragrance ambassador for YSL Beauty’s stellar new men’s fragrance, Y.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Levine started his musical career while still attending Brentwood High School, eventually becoming the front man and primary songwriter for award-winning, chart-topping band Maroon 5. He is also a coach on the three-time Emmy Award winning NBC hit series, The Voice, and has appeared in Family Guy; 30 Rock and American Horror Story. Charismatic, endearing and enthusiastic, he’s also not afraid to make a style statement – even if that involves being mostly naked!
YSL Beauty has said that the brand is proud to welcome on board the supremely talented recording artist, actor, and presenter, calling him a “multifaceted modern man” and the embodiment of Y, the latest masculine fragrance launch by YSL.
“I’m psyched to be collaborating with YSL Beauty, a brand which has always appealed to me for its standout style and groundbreaking imagery,” says Levine. “As a musician, I relate to the raw passion and strong sense of individuality of YSL; and being a part of the story of Y is exciting to me - it is not the story of one man, but of a whole creative generation. I’m excited to develop our relationship and see where it will lead.”
“Adam Levine is the perfect fit for the brand and what our new fragrance Y represents,” says Alexandre Choueiri, President, International Designer Collections, L’Oréal USA. “A star of the music world, a familiar face on our screens, a true talent, he brings a new dimension to YSL Beauty.”
In other words: a match made in heaven. Congrats, Mr. Levine!

Beauty news: Estée Lauder unveils this year’s Pink Ribbon line up

Did you know that 25 years ago there was no pink ribbon campaign to raise awareness of breast cancer? Women around the world were dying from the disease but there was very little discussion about it. A philanthropist as well as an innovator, the legendary Mrs. Estée Lauder saw an urgent need to bring breast cancer to the forefront and put a spotlight on this world health issue. So in 1992, she became a pioneer for the breast cancer movement, co-creating the pink ribbon and launching The Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Campaign. A year later, she founded the Breast Cancer Research Foundation® (BCRF), a non-profit organization, to generate funding solely dedicated to breast cancer research.
Today, the pink ribbon is the ubiquitous symbol of breast health and the campaign is a global leading voice for breast cancer, igniting a worldwide movement that has funded innovative research and awareness, and inspired meaningful action. As someone who is currently being treated for her second breast cancer diagnosis in five years, this type of movement is huge. Early detection was rarely discussed prior to Lauder’s work, and without it, many lives were lost. Today we talk about breast cancer in private and in public, and women are all the better for it.
To mark the 25th Anniversary of Mrs. Lauder’s work, The Estée Lauder Companies has a new mission: to create a breast cancer-free world. A bold, thought-provoking visual of a tattered pink ribbon is being introduced, showing the wear and tear of 25 years of hard work, dedication and impact trying to cure this disease. It also represents the hope that in 25 years, there will be no need for a pink ribbon; breast cancer will be committed to the history books. The Campaign no longer carries the word “Awareness” as breast cancer now has the global spotlight it deserves, moving into the future with a new rally – it’s time to end breast cancer.
The Campaign is now active in more than 70 countries around the world, partnering with more than 60 regional organizations to address areas of most critical need. The Campaign has raised more than $70 million to support global research, education and medical services, funding an incredible 225 medical research grants through BCRF ($56 million from total funds raised).
Four of The Estée Lauder Companies’ New Zealand beauty brands support the mission to create a breast cancer-free world and raise funds for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation (NZBCF), and each year the products they create to go with the campaign are just beautiful. This year’s line up is:
Bobbi Brown Pink Peony Illuminating Bronzing Powder Set

Love it: Kiehl’s Cucumber Herbal Conditioning Cleanser

Cleansing your skin is one of the most important parts of the skincare regimen, and it’s always a good idea to track down a lighter yet still nourishing cleanser when the temperature starts to rise. It can definitely help address the dryness that comes with the change in season and when used correctly can make a real difference to your skin’s health and wellbeing. Cleansing removes makeup, dirt and debris from the skin. It also helps to cleanse pores (hair follicles actually) of dead skin cells and sebum to help prevent acne. Skin craziness also ramps up when the temperature does – as in: silly season parties and associated shenanigans and makeup meltdown, and humid air leading to clogged pores. You need a cleanser that cares, and boy, do I have the one for you!
It comes in the form of Kiehl’s new Cucumber Herbal Conditioning Cleanser, which lands on counter (RRP $42) on October 16. An ultra-gentle, foaming gel-lotion cleanser, it softly melts away dirt, impurities, and make-up while conditioning even dry, sensitive skin for a fresh-feeling clean that lasts all day. Formulated with whole cucumbers, carefully extracted to preserve the quality and nutrients of the fruit, and plant-based glycerin, this non-drying, non-irritating beauty maintains your skin's moisture levels and leaves it soothed, velvety soft, and comfortably cleansed. Cucumber is a popular ingredient at Kiehl’s with good reason: its ability to soothe is second to none. Add to that the fact that this cleanser is soap and sulfate free and you have a naturally caring powerhouse that can be used daily on all skin types, particularly sensitive ones.
To use, apply a small amount to clean fingertips and gently massage into damp facial areas in upward, circular motions. Rinse thoroughly or remove excess with a damp face cloth and you’re good to go – zero tightness and soft, soothed skin. After cleansing with Kiehl’s Cucumber Herbal Conditioning Cleanser for the first time my skin felt not only incredibly refreshed but also delightfully hydrated – exactly what you need come summer.

All about: Pure Fiji Coconut Lime Blossom collection

When you’re having windswept, raining spring days like I’ve been having in Auckland over the past week, thoughts turn to the tropics and how much of a boost to the spirit time spent there really is. I was lucky enough to travel for work to Fiji’s Malolo Island in early August, and would have given anything to be able to bottle up the sensorial bliss that I found there.
The closest thing to exactly that is Pure Fiji, who constantly invent new and beautiful ways to transport me back to the islands with just a whiff of their unique fragrances. They are a global brand but still proudly Fiji-based, with a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility and corporate offices located on a two-acre property in Suva, capital of the Fiji Islands. The Pure Fiji complex boasts an internationally renowned Day Spa, Health and Wellness Centre, Group Fitness studio, hair and makeup salon as well as herb, spice and vegetable gardens, which one day I hope to make a pilgrimage to.
Pure Fiji is also still the only cosmetic manufacturing company in the South Pacific and passionately advocates premium natural products while respecting the Fijian people, culture and environment. Their admirable sustainable manufacturing practices help support several villages and funds schools, health care, nutrition and basic infrastructure for hundreds of people in rural Fiji, and they have always sought to maintain a minimal carbon footprint in the manufacturing and distribution of their products. All exports are carbon offset, all packaging is biodegradable, and all products are also grey-water safe. How great is that?
But back to their delicious product lines, the latest of which is the Pure Fiji Coconut Lime Blossom collection. A new addition to their Hydro-Radiance signature line, it comes in the form of beautiful, high performance products with the multi layered aroma of fresh coconut milk infused with zesty lime and a hint of lime blossom, which aim to have you drifting a way to your island paradise.
Fresh coconuts are an amazing food source, but also offer a myriad of skin enhancing benefits that help to soften, hydrate, soothe and protect the skin. Add to that lime - rich in powerful antioxidants like vitamin C to help boost collagen production and help to tighten pores, remove dry skin cells and brighten skin tone – and lime leaf hydrosol for a refreshing burst of moisture, and you have one heady mix. I fell in love with this new offering from the moment I experience it one rainy morning at a beautiful Pure Fiji event at The Lula Inn, and have been using it with abandon ever since.
The Coconut Lime Blossom infusion is available as:
Hydrating Body Lotion $49 (also available in travel size $20)
Exotic Body Oil $46 (also available in travel size $20)
Milk Bath Soak $46
Sugar Rub $66.50
Body Butter $46
Hydrating Body Mist 90ml $20
Shower Gel $31
Hydrating Hand Crème $30 (also available in 35ml $13)
Exotic Oil Rollerball $22
Luxury Soap $15 (also available in 50g $6.50)
The perfect gift options for Christmas – or any time really! – this new beauty comes highly recommended.
