Love it: L’Oréal Professionnel’s new Ombre Nature collection

It’s had its naysayers over the past year, but in my opinion, the Ombre hair trend is here to stay. There has been a definite shift away from the dip-dyed look however, and into something a little less harsh - including on the condition of the hair - and L’Oréal Professionnel’s new Ombre Nature service has pretty much nailed it.
Reportedly inspired by runway looks from around the globe, the global beauty giant’s newest colour collection is made up of three delicious new mocha shades in the INOA range. It sees L’Oréal Professionnel transforming the balayage trend somewhat and making it still fresh, and is the perfect pick for clients who need to restore lift to their brunette look. INOA also has 100 per cent grey coverage, which is a major bonus for a lot of dark-haired gals I know.
Three collection looks were created under the Ombre Nature moniker by UK hairstylist James Pecis and renowned colour specialist Nathan Walker, from Trevor Sorbie, UK. Together, they created three interpretations of the trend: “Sophisticated”, “Cool” and “Pop” nature, the first two of which are above.
They call Sophisticated (above, top) the ultimate in Parisian chic, and the style is characterised by a bold Versace-like fringe softened by waves and wispy tones of cool blondes through the mid-lengths and ends. Cool (above, below) is a little edgier, with a cut the likes of Karlie Kloss and Alexa Chung messy bobs, with a highly textured fringe and soft wavy lines.
Whatever your pick it’s a winner in my humble opinion, and a great way to warm up your beauty look as we head to the summer months. I want one! The new INOA mocha shades launch into salons just in time too - October 2013.

Travel beauty blog: London's Perfect 10 mobile beauty

When I arrived in London after almost a month in France I was tanned, relaxed and feeling pretty damn peachy, but lugging heavy suitcases - and a heavy shopping schedule - coupled with a plethora of unfamiliar pillows had left my back feeling not so great… and it needed sorting ASAP.
I was in an unfamiliar city with no car, and to be honest the idea of traipsing up and down escalators to and from the tube would probably cancel out the whole massage experience anyway!
Several days before arriving however I’d read about the Perfect 10 mobile beauty service in UK Vogue, and when I was given the chance to try it I jumped at the chance - a massage, without leaving our flat in Pimlico? Seriously up my alley!
Founded by Beauty Therapist - and generally very smart lady - Claire Aggarwal, Perfect 10 is a first class mobile beauty service at work in the London area that offers an array of head-to-toe treatments. Claire trains qualified and experienced beauty therapists herself in what has been called “the Perfect 10 way”, bringing the beauty parlour to your front room (or in my case, main bedroom). They offer everything from Sienna X Spray Tans to a full waxing menu, reportedly amazing facials (with no need to worry that you might bump into someone on the way home, sans fards), Essie Manis and Pedis and my own experience, the Deep Tissue option from the massage menu.
After arriving late at night in London and having a frantic morning with my son, the best thing ever was a ring on the doorbell at 11:30am from the wonderful Lauren (a fellow Kiwi, even better!). She arrived fully equipped with a comfy massage bed, scented oils and even soothing sounds, and one hour later it was if my cranky back had been replaced with a most definitely happy one. She concentrated on my back mostly, counteracting the travails that it had been victim to lately and leaving me walking on air. Four weeks’ worth of unfamiliar beds, heavy suitcases and multiple shopping bags - gone in less than an hour… miraculous!
If you live in London or are just passing through then I highly recommend a visit from this brilliant service for whatever your beauty need. The only problem? They won’t travel as far as New Zealand, damn it!
For a list of what they can do head here.

Beauty news: the beautiful Spring Spa comes to Auckland

Mid way through last year I was lucky enough to find myself in stunning Queenstown – I swear it’s like looking at a chocolate box photo every corner you turn – and spent a wonderful hour at the then newly opened Spring Spa.
Spring is the stroke of genius of the always-charming and ridiculously clever Ina Bajaj, the creator of the world-renowned East Day Spa. So despite the fact that they are quite a different beauty destination to East, they provide the same high standards of treatment and superior levels of service East is famous for, but with what they call “a Spring spin”.
When I visited, feet were the main focus at Spring, and they offer everything from massage to reflexology and pedicures - as well as a whole bunch of add-on's so you can customise your treatment to your needs. They also offer stellar manicures, threading and waxing as well as packages to remedy your jetlag or help you recover from a hard day on the slopes, and facials that sounded seriously good. My signature treatment involved a foot soak and scrub and then 30 minutes of reflexology followed by a 30 minute neck and shoulder massage, finishing with tea and a good five minutes of blissing out! I also had an oxygen treatment while having my feet massaged, and an iPad to play with so I could check my emails if need be. They encourage a social atmosphere with groups more than welcome, or you can draw your curtains and Zen out by yourself.
My only complaint was that Spring wasn’t in Auckland (!), but now that’s all about to change as the clever social spa experience is arriving this October at a new premises in St Heliers. Owner of Spring Spa and Founder of East Day Spa, Ina says she’s excited to bring the Spring concept to Auckland, and has plans to take it internationally. “We opened our first Spring Spa in Queenstown last year, and along with our East Day Spa brand with locations in Auckland, Wellington and Melbourne, we saw an opening in Auckland for a social spa of this kind.”
There will be a strong emphasis on nails, skincare treatments, as well as massage, and Spring will feature a retail focus offering exclusive, world-leading brands such as Bliss and Clarisonic - two of my absolute faves.
Auckland’s first Spring spa will be located at 8 Turua Street, St Heliers, with more Auckland locations envisaged over the coming year.

Giveaway & 5 ways to Optimise your next Detox

I am fresh from a 26-hour flight home from Europe, and as I type - I’m not going to lie here - I feel absolutely dreadful. A lengthy plane ride will do that to you, and coupled with way too much rich food and delicious wine on an all too regular basis for the past four weeks I am most definitely in the mood for a bit of a spring clean - bod-wise as well as to cram all of my shopping into the damn wardrobe!
I asked GO Healthy Naturopath Janeen Howard (pictured left) for her advice around approaching a detox, which she says is perfectly suited to the springtime. Here are her five key ways to optimise a detox, and become a fresher, healthier you...

1.     Exercise your Body:
Not only does exercise make you feel better, but it’s also an easy way to help your body detox. Toxins are cleared out of your body faster when you sweat.

2.     Dry Skin Brushing:
The skin is responsible for a great deal of daily detoxification, and dry skin brushing helps to move toxins out of the body. Begin at your feet and brush upwards toward the heart.
3.     Eat Well:
Ensure your diet is rich in vegetables, fruits, whole foods and lean protein. Eat organic where possible. Not only will our liver and digestive system love you for it, but so will your waist line. Not to mention, healthier, glowing skin!
4.     Stay Hydrated:
Drink eight glasses of water per day to aid in the elimination of toxins. Drink herbal teas instead of coffee. Start the day with a squeeze of lemon juice in warm water to kickstart your digestive juices and stimulate liver function.
5.     Supplements:
A high quality multi vitamin will supply all the key nutrients your body requires and address any possible deficiencies. Fish or Krill Oil will provide your daily essential fatty acids for not only health and wellbeing, but also for great looking skin. Probiotic is a friendly bacteria that works hard to maintain a healthy digestive microflora, and of course any gentle detox supports our hard-working liver. Antioxidants are essential to mop up free radicals. My all time favourite herb for detoxing is Milk Thistle.

GO Healthy have just released SLIMFAST Detox Diva, which provides a “combination of potent nutrients, antioxidants and herbs to help dropkick toxins from the body, pump up energy levels and burn-baby-burn to support liver function and healthy weight management.” The specific combination of nutrients, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals in Detox Diva includes Actazin (New Zealand Kiwifruit Extract) to support digestive health and function, Ginger to aid digestion and settle queasy tummies, Milk Thistle for liver health and Japanese knotweed, containing the powerful antioxidant, Resveratrol. Kudzu is in there to help manage the craving for alcohol and last up is Taurine: an amino acid that helps to remove toxins from the liver.
If you’re in the mood to detox like me then you’re in luck - I have three bottles of SLIMFAST Detox Diva to giveaway! Simply email me with your name and delivery address by this Friday at 5:00pm and you’re in the draw…

Love it: Dr. Hauschka's miraculous Moisturising Mask

Often called a “miracle in a tube” with very good reason, Dr. Hauschka’s Moisturising Mask has been a godsend to me over the past few weeks of travel and I think always will be!
It’s a heady mix of Almond, Avocado and Jojoba oils to nourish the skin, whilst Quince extract is also in there to add to the love with its extraordinary moisturising properties. Richly nourishing and a true joy to layer on, it is perfect for extremely dry, sensitive, sun damaged skin as it maintains and restores the natural acid balance that helps to protect the skin.
The aim is to use it once or twice a week as an intensive skin care treatment, and I’ve been popping it on before jumping in a bath for a double whammy. Apply it to totally cleansed skin and leave for about 10-20 minutes then remove any excess with a warm, moist cloth.
If you’re new to using Dr.Hauschka it is the perfect thing to harmonises the skin if there are problems when first changing over, of for severely dry skin, apply the mask thinly every day for 6 weeks as a moisturiser (a 6 week period makes sure that your skin's natural 28 day cycle is completely covered). Magical stuff!

Beauty news: the #ghdproudtobepink competition

As a breast cancer survivor I’m all about raising awareness - and the funds to fight - the disease striking down what seems to be an insane amount of women in my orbit, and the latest I’ve heard about come courtesy of the eternally-loved ghd. I remember years ago writing about this brand’s breast cancer initiatives, which have always been unique, creative and very cool.
The latest in New Zealand asks you to help ghd support the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation “and show us how you're proud to be PINK!”
It comes in the form of a totally visual competition, which asks you to let loose the creativity when it comes to PINK DIAMOND.
To enter, follow @ghdnz on Instagram and then upload your PINK DIAMOND inspired image with the hashtag #ghdproudtobepink and your photo will pop up in the gallery within the Facebook application. The lucky winner will receive a ghd V pink diamond professional styler set, a Jazz Night Dress from RUBY and a pampering package from a ghd salon. Four runners up will also win a ghd V pink diamond professional styler set, so although the competition will be fierce, there is more than one winner on the day!
The competition finishes on the 4th September at 11:59pm, so get creative and get tagging.

Travel essential: Kate Somerville Somerville360° Tanning Towelettes

When I was first introduced to Kate Somerville Somerville360° Tanning Towelettes it was the launch of the legendary LA-based beauty brand into the Australian and New Zealand market, courtesy of the so-great-it-slays-me-every-visit Mecca Cosmetica.
If you’re unfamiliary with the brand, here’s a quick rundown. The creator and director of her own renowned medi-skin clinic on Melrose in Los Angeles, Kate Somerville has devoted her life to creating flawless faces. In fact, she is personally responsible for the glowing complexions of hundreds of leading ladies, whose livelihoods depend on their looks. When it comes to a clear complexion and a gorgeous glow, stars like Jessica Alba, Katherine Heigl, Selma Blair, and Debra Messing depend on Kate’s clever hands and killer products. She was one of the first paramedical aestheticians in the business, partnering early on with top dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons. This is where her authenticity lies, as well as her unique understanding of skin and how best to heal and protect it.
Every product in her range began life in her clinic, and was tried and tested for months on end as well as often growing out of client need rather than to fit a marketing calendar. A perfect example of this is her Somerville360° Body Self Tanning Towelettes - the topic of this very post - which contain a paraben-free self-tanning formula to give you a quick and even application with no streaking. She formulated these after years of despairing over client Paris Hilton’s shockingly fake looking spray tans, and the Hollywood princess was all the better for it!
Incredibly easy to use and perfect for travel as they come individually sealed - no need to stress about bottles or tubes busting out en route - each Somerville360° Tanning Towelette is concentrated with a self-tanning formula to give you a quick and even application with no streaking. They give a superbly natural-looking glow within two to four hours, and for a deeper tan and to maintain your glow, reapply as needed. I admit to loving the sun and tanning a little with care, but these babies boost what I already have and give a totally sunkissed glow.
As well as being Paraben free as aforementioned, they are also minus Sulfates, Synthetic Dyes, Petrochemicals, Phthalates, GMOs and Triclosan - getting major bonus points from me.
To use, unfold the towelette and apply to dry, clean skin in a circular motion over your face and body, being sure to wash hands immediately that you’re done. Et voilà! Tan-tastic perfection.

Love it: Smashbox Cosmetics Photo Op Eye Brightening Mascara

One of my favourite beauty products to test is mascara - the end results always vary greatly, and its the source of instant gratification when you’ve lucked onto a good one.
The latest I’ve been using is by Smashbox Cosmetics, and it does for my eyes what asking for a blue-black as opposed to black shade achieves when I’m having my lashes tinted - a totally bright-eyed, ready for anything-type look. As in, the perfect answer when you’re not feeling so bushy tailed at all, but by god you’d never guess it!
Called Photo Op Eye Brightening Mascara, it’s a dual-benefit mascara that has been developed with what the LA-based beauty brand calls “a unique Blue Prism Technology” - a blend of Luscious Micas, Bright Titanium and Blue Pigment. These subtle blue undertones makes it more than just another shade of black, helping to accentuate eyes and make them appear brighter. As an added bonus, it also instantly curls lashes by 100 per cent to completely open up the eyes for a wide-awake look.
The clever formula comes with a unique hollow-fibre brush that deposits the maximum amount of product on each individual lash, ensuring even distribution for a dramatic 30-degree curling effect. That is some serious lash - and that’s coming from someone who is always in search of exactly that.
It’s a no-rub, no-smudge formula that has been created to combat clumping, flaking, smudging and spiking, as well as with the ability to repair broken bonds within lashes and restores suppleness, so lashes stay naturally longer. Pretty amazing all round really, and definitely a mascara that gives instant gratification and then some. Love it!

Summer essential: COOLA Environmental Repair Plus Radical Recovery After-Sun Lotion

It might have one of the lengthiest names on the market, but COOLA’s Environmental Repair Plus Radical Recovery After-Sun Lotion in definitely one worth remembering.
We all have the best intentions once we hit the sun come summer or on an exotic sojourn to somewhere a hell of a lot warmer than home, but chances are the hint of a burn may happen. Or an all-out-missed-the-sunblock-in-that-area assault. I’ve been away for just on a week and already seen a few of the former, so the fact that I’ve packed the aforementioned newbie by COOLA is a godsend.
The newest addition to COOLA’s Environmental Repair Plus Line, Radical Recovery After-Sun Lotion is essentially an ultra-moisturizing and deep-soothing lotion that uses organic Agave’s natural moisture binding mechanisms for environmental defense and calming sunburn. This miracle plant provides superior hydration and promotes collagen synthesis while offering UV protection and clinically proven relief from sunburn - just what the doctor ordered. It’s rich in organic ingredients - 99 per cent of the total ingredients are from Natural Origin and 70 per cent of the total ingredients are from Organic Farming - and by golly it works.
Last up, the ease and swiftness with which this absorbs is truly extraordinary - making it easy to use at any time of day.
And if you’re not familiar with COOLA products - you should be - they are made in the USA with up 97 per cent certified organic ingredients, crafted with care and powered by nature in sunny San Diego.
This beauty arrives in New Zealand this September - check for stockist details and get one in your bathroom cabinet before summer hits!

Love it: Origins No Puffery

This travel beauty blog comes straight from a feeling of post-flight relief - as in two flights (one a long haul) in just over two days and not a sign of a tired eye, miraculous!
The wonder beauty tool responsible for this outpouring of joy is Origins No Puffery, which is available in New Zealand at the wonderful Mecca Cosmetica and really is a little tube of magic. A roll-on eye treatment designed to “de-puff” whenever you need, it is housed in a handbag-friendly little squeeze tube not much bigger than the typical lip gloss that has a cooling metal tip to distribute the hydrating yet soothing liquid within with ease. Basically, this nifty little product rolls on to the skin around the eyes via the cooling, massage-like roller ball and uses ingredients such as yeast to deflate any bags/puffy skin and Hoelen Mushroom extract to calm, soothe and reduce redness as it goes straight to work. And because it is the creation of the brilliant Origins, it is free of Parabens, Sulfates and Phthalates, and has been ophthalmologist tested.
To use it, gently roll under each eye from inner corner to outer corner twice, patting in with your ring finger if you feel the need. I reckon for an extra treat when the temperature is rising, pop this in the fridge for an even greater cooling effect - just perfect post-flight, post-big night or just when you feel the need.

Marvellous multitaskers: INIKA Crème Colour for Cheeks, Lips and Eyes

I’m in France as I type, and damn it took a long time to get here. A 25 hour flight for starters, followed by a couple of days in an unexpectedly cold and rainy United Kingdom for some down time before boarding a flight to sunny La Romieu. To say that my skin and my patience has taken a battering would be an understatement, but I packed a great line up of travel minis and multitakers to more than make up for it.
A couple in the latter category that have really won me over are Australian natural beauty company INIKA Cosmetics’ first organic and natural Crème Colour for cheeks, lips and eyes. They aim to deliver rich, intense shades in skin-friendly formulations with ultimate staying power, and as well as being beautiful to use are rich in skin enhancing organic antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Just what I need!
The Crème Colour for Cheeks and Lips is an absolute wonder, and so small and perfectly formed it’s ridiculous. Infused with Sweet Almond Oil and Vitamin E, it moisturises, glides on effortlessly and lasts - even pretty damn well in 32 degrees Celsius (as I type). Hypoallergenic organic Carnuba Wax helps with blendability and is kind on even the most sensitive of skin types, whilst the two shades - Vibrant Rosehip and Dusty Rose  - work beautifully on lips and cheeks.
The Crème Colour for Eyes isn’t a multitasker as such, but still deserves some props for being a right treat to use. The nourishing formula fuses Aloe Vera, Shea Butter, Jojoba Seed Oil and Sweet Almond Oil to hydrate, soothe and moisturise the eye area, whilst amazing stay-ability and ability to remain crease-proof is an added bonus. The two colours available are Milky Cappuccino - a beautiful nude canvas  - and Champagne, which is a great highlighter and seems to work a treat on the brow bone too.
So - both are available in store now with an RRP $39.00 and come highly recommended.
