All about: the M.A.C Archie’s Girls collection

It appears that one of my childhood comic favourites - Archie - is one very busy man these days. Not only has he got a special four-issue story arc crossover with the Fox hit Glee coming up, but he’s also collaborated with the glorious M.A.C Cosmetics in the form of a new limited edition collection called “M.A.C Archie’s Girls.”
As the name suggests, the products are based around the beauty looks of his love rivals: blonde girl-next-door Betty and glamorous brunette and sexpot Veronica.  The line up features products with fun colours and hearts inspired by the iconic blonde and brunette, who constantly fought to win the heart of Archie, star of the renowned comic book series.
It is not the first time M.A.C has paired with a comic publisher - they joined DC Comics for a line of Wonder Woman cosmetics and merchandise not too long ago – and the brand is the perfect fit with the genre in my humble opinion.

MAC Archie’s Girls had their big debut at Comic-Con International in San Diego back in July 2012 with Archie artist Dan Parent on hand at the M.A.C store there to demonstrate his art technique and do custom sketches for fans – how cool is that? You could also schedule an appointment with one of M.A.C’s makeup artists to get a Comic Con-inspired look, which must have lead to some seriously cool results.
But back to the line up of Archie’s Girls products, which are absolutely gorgeous. My favourites are definitely from Veronica’s collection, which features the beautiful ‘Spoiled Rich’ palette of four heavily pigmented, jewel-like tones. These are ideally matched with the Designer Purple Violet with Pearl Pearlglide Intense Eye Liner - covered with the cutest hearts – for an intense take on a smoky eye. Just gorgeous huh?
Archie’s Girls is on counter March 2013 so get saving your pennies now!

In love with: O&M's Original Queenie hairspray

Hairspray is one of the unsung heroes of beauty, thought of often as just an old school afterthought when all of the foams/mousses/waxes/serums have been thrown in to do their stuff. When they are good however this is most definitely not the case – and O&M Original Queenie is my long locks’ new best friend.
The seriously great Australian haircare brand calls it “a twist on the stone cold classic,” and it is as flexible as it gets but reins things in where you need it. There is also no trace of the flaking or unwanted stickiness that comes with many a spray, and I love the fact that it is made from natural ingredients. One of these is Lilly Pilly, which works to absorb oil from the hair almost in the style of a dry shampoo, and Quandong, which moisturises the hair and protects it during heat styling.
And although it retails for $38.00 when many a respectable formula costs a lot less, in my opinion it is totally worth it for a number of reasons. The first is that you need just a few sprays for some major hold, flyaways and curls are easily tamed and volume stays in place. It also smells divine – a factor common to the O&M brand and their collection of killer prods – and it has not been tested on animals. Last but not least, it comes in the cutest watermelon pink can! Love it.

What a steal: NIVEA Lip Butters

Like hand creams, lip balms/butters/creams are something I have all over my house, in every bag and in my car, and when I get a good one I buy it over and over again. This can get dangerous if they are at the ‘splurge’ end of the spectrum, but some yummy little pots of goodness arriving in store in April from NIVEA are most definitely quite the opposite!
An all new range for the mega brand, Lip Butters aim to “provide rich moisturisation and treat your senses to a buttery soft formula and delicious scent”, and they aren’t kidding! They totally melt on application and the moisture they pop in is definitely long lasting. NIVEA Lip Butters are formulated using the brand’s own Hydra IQ deep moisture technology, which naturally hydrates skin from within as well as on the surface. They also contain shea butter - which is rich in vitamins and protects the sensitive skin of the lips against the elements – and mild almond oil with vitamin E.
Also pretty fabulous is the fact that they are available in three flavours: Unscented, Vanilla & Macadamia and the ridiculously decadent Caramel Cream.
And now for the ‘steal’ part – these little pots of joy retail for a truly insane $5.49, so if you’re a lip butter lover then I highly recommend that you pick one up… hell pick up all three!

Why you need: Weleda Iris Hydrating Masque

I don’t know about you, but right now my skin is really feeling the effects of the heat, holiday festivities and loads of time spent outdoors – and it’s not thanking me for it!
Cue the arrival on my desk – and now in my bathroom - of Weleda’s beautiful Iris Hydrating Masque, which when used regularly, helps give your skin a boost beyond belief – even if you have been burning the candle at both ends and chugging on chardonnay rather than curly kale smoothies!
The iris plant is one of those unique creatures that has the ability to adapt to extreme environmental conditions, surviving in both desert and wetland areas. One of nature’s survivors, it stays in bloom no matter what Mother Earth tries to throw at it, a quality we’d all love to see in our skin.
In line with the physical make up of the plant, the Iris extract (Weleda uses iris plants biodynamically harvested in the Tuscan region of Italy) present in this tube of goodness - derived from the rhizome (root) - first moisturises the outermost epidermal layer of the skin. This process reportedly produces keratin, giving the skin resilience and melanin, which then helps protect the skin from sunlight. Add to that a high quality mix of almond and jojoba oil to soothe, soften and strengthen skin's own protective barrier and prevent future dehydration and you have a wee powerhouse at your fingertips.
I’ve been popping it on once or twice a week in the evening for around 20 minutes and my skin absolutely soaks it up, so get in there and grab one for yourself!

All about: New Zealand natural skincare company Tease Botanix

Over the past year I’ve been contacted by a number of beauty pioneers creating rather amazing new ranges from the area in New Zealand known as the Bay of Plenty – which seems to be living up to his name!
The latest is Tease Botanix botanical skincare, which was created by a very clever woman called Teena Cooke. Teena reportedly developed a passion for herbal gardening, herbal medicine, nutrition and health when her own health suffered due to a chemical “overload” in her system several years ago. Almost overnight she turned her lifestyle around, eating organic, making exercise a daily part of her life and becoming more selective about what beauty care products she used. A decision to completely remove herself from her ‘chemical’ work environment was inevitable, so she sold her hair salon in 2000 and joined the NZ Police.
She moved to Auckland where she found a beautiful organic lifestyle block to live on and it was there that she started making products for herself, with her family and friends unwittingly being her guinea pigs. Her successes coupled with the encouragement she received, a small cottage business started.
In 2006 Tease Organix Ltd was formed, and she started selling her products, then called 'Tease Organix”, at the local Farmers Market. In 2011 Tease Organix became Tease Botanix, and the range is now available at select stockists up and down the country. During that period she also made the move to the Bay of Plenty, definitely one of our country’s most beautiful spots!
Teena has hand-made her products, bottled and labelled in small batches for her customers since 2005, but has now passed the task on to a small laboratory who adhere to all of her original principles of purity et al. The formulas still make use of natures’ ingredients, pure botanical extracts and top quality plant oils, and Teena likes to say that “Nature in a Bottle” symbolises the company’s commitment to efficacy with using what Nature has to offer, with what man has learnt to capture. They also use only 1 per cent preservative in all of their products, and use truly natural or, where they have no option, naturally derived ingredients. Very cool!
I’ve been having a play with a few of Teena’s products over the summer and one I’ve really been impressed by is the Immortelle Rejuvenating Crème (pictured). It’s a luxe mix of powerful botanical oils of Camellia, Olive & Coconut, alongside pure Rosehip Oil and Jojoba. Key ingredient Immortelle is one of the most ancient healing substances known to man - it's thought to help heal physical and emotional scarring, opens the heart connecting body and spirit – and gives this beautiful cream its delicious scent along with Ylang-ylang and Lavender.  It’s best suited to dry, mature skin, although I think it would make the perfect boost for any skin type in the cooler months when we all tend to get a little dehydrated as the temperature drops.
If you like buying local and great natural formulas then have a peak at the Tease Botanix website – I guarantee you will find something there to fall in love with, and your skin will too.

Love it, need it: Lancôme Hypnôse Star Mascara

I love a fabulously luxe lash, and when I look for mascara I look for big, bold, lush and sexy. Lancôme most definitely decided to answer my prayers with the new Hypnôse Star Mascara, which is absolutely top notch on all fronts.
New to the Hypnôse line of mascaras, the Lancôme Hypnôse Star Mascara really is the ultra-glam volumising mascara for show-stopping, sassy eyes, and I’ve been loving having a play with it over the holiday season – and now beyond. The sparkling tube (one of the prettiest mascara tubes I’ve ever seen) is on counter right now, alongside the cutest campaign shot of spokesmodel Daria Werbowy and the iconic Betty Boop.
The mascara has one of the most unusual – and clever - brushes I’ve ever used.  It is a bristle brush, not a plastic one, and it has a very unique shape (I’ve never used a mascara with a wand like this, and it is very cool). The dual-action brush has a flat side for optimising product deposit at the lash line while the rounded side separates, defines, and lengthens.
The tip tapers to a very small point, and the cone shape of the mascara brush helps to really get close to the lash line and inner corners. Getting closer to the lashline makes a huge difference to the end result as this is where you want to build volume, and this formula is very much a super-charged volumising mascara.
And although powerful, the formula is a remarkably light texture to wear, and it is definitely more of a dry mascara rather than a wet one. The hard carnauba wax helps to set lashes in a curl so that they stay lifted that much longer, and so far I’ve had that effect last all day long and well into the evening.
As for the shade, it is super black with almost a glossy finish – think the shiniest patent leather look, which is enhanced even further by light-reflecting oils. Lancôme themselves call it the "black-diamond effect" and I couldn’t agree more – it is simply gorgeous.
This really is one of the best formulas I’ve tried in a very long time, and if you like a lush lash like me then I heartily recommend that you give it a whirl.

Beauty news: watching SANS go seriously global

Seeing Lucy Marr’s SANS brand name checked in the February issue of Allure magazine as a “next big breakthrough” for 2013 was a huge buzz for me. I have watched the beautiful collection of hair and body products being born and blossom into some serious beauty contenders, and to see them being acknowledged world wide – and in the pages of a major beauty bible – is just such a sweet thing.
If you haven’t heard of it before (shame on you!) Sans is pure, chemical-free and highly active new generation beauty at its best: a collection of products designed to renew the texture and appearance of your skin and hair that doesn’t harm the user or the environment. Unable to find products that were highly active but also pure and chemical-free, creator Lucy enlisted New Zealand’s top scientists to create a range of products unlike any other. Sans products use potent vitamin actives to repair, nourish and protect. These ingredients have been proven in rigorous scientific trials to actually change the appearance of skin and hair, helping it to recover from sun damage, skin pollutants and irritants. As I’m always ranting about, many ‘natural’ products today still contain sulfates, silicones, petrochemicals, artificial dyes, artificial colours, artificial fragrances and parabens. Sans contains no artificial chemicals – only sustainably harvested, natural ingredients and organic wherever possible - and in line with the name (Sans is French for ‘without’), the collection is pure, clean and without any unnecessary or harmful ingredients, reducing your daily beauty regime to a concise selection of multi-functional, highly effective products. It even uses PETG for its packaging, a modern, safe and non-leaching form of plastic that is the most stable packaging material available today.
My favourites from the brand include the Activator 7 Body Oil (pictured), a reparative oil using active vitamin A to stimulate cell repair, increase collagen production and boost skin thickness and elasticity that is delicious, and guilt-free. The beautiful formulation hydrates and feels gently healing, as well as leaving not a trace of grease or residue on my skin post-shower and keeps my eczema at bay. Oh, and did I mention it smells good enough to eat, in a very unobtrusive way?
The second biggest buzz I got from reading the piece about Sans in Allure was that it named a “Body Serum” as being the product to watch, one that hasn’t been launched yet but that I am already seriously excited about. Want it now!

Beauty news: new prices - and wants! - from St. Tropez

In the lead up to Christmas I was lucky enough to be paid a visit at home by tanning maven Abbi Hollins, one of St. Tropez’s most experienced team members. She has been working with the brand since 2006 when she was first trained in its wonders in the UK, and is now based in Australia leading the team over there.
The occasion was a celebration of the brand’s amazing new pricing structure, which sees St. Tropez’s stellar tanning products available at some seriously attractive new prices. My personal favourite, the Every Day Gradual Tan, has dropped from $59.00 to an amazing $39.95 just for starters! Abbi gave me a beautiful, golden, natural tan that lasted well over seven days, and I just wish she could come around once every couple of weeks for a repeat performance!
A great example of how their products can work for every skin tone was in evidence at the recent Golden Globes, where St.Tropez Skin Finishing Expert Fiona Locke went to work bronzing usually pale names like Kelly Osbourne and Sienne Miller. The latter – wearing Erdem – is a classic English Rose, and Locke said “she has a very beautiful English skin tone so I wanted to keep her colour very light and dewy. My goal was to give a gentle hint of colour that would enhance her natural beauty and complement her gown.” Key to her look was the St. Tropez Rose Skin Illuminator, which was used to highlight her arms, shoulders, shins and décolletage. She also used the St.Tropez Perfect Legs Spray, “which is not only for the legs but can be used as a travel size version of the original formula, perfect for touch ups on the go.”
I haven’t tried any of goodies the St. Tropez Skin Illuminator collection but am gagging to now. The original Violet Illuminator was used backstage at Marios Schwab S/S 10 at London Fashion Week and has reportedly since proved to be an essential beauty must-have for its unique violet tone and luminous results.
Violet is perfect for all skintones, whilst the Gold Illuminator is great for skin with yellow or gold undertones. The aforementioned Rose Illuminator is ideal for skin with blue, pink and violet undertones.
You can even blend them with St Tropez Body Moisturiser for a more subtle effect for daytime but I’m dying to try Gold to take my natural tan a little deeper and give it some shimmer. Beautiful stuff!

Beauty news: big congratulations to M.A.C’s Amber D and Nicole T

When I was two thirds of the way through my five week long course of daily radiation therapy in September of last year, my mood was at an all time low. I was suffering from a combination of chronic tiredness and radiation burns, the latter of which made wearing 90 per cent of my wardrobe just not an option. I don’t think I’d ever felt less feminine, let alone remotely attractive.
Just when I was feeling at my most well, crap, I received a text from M.A.C New Zealand’s Senior Makeup Artist, Amber D, offering to look after our four year old for a night out AND give me a fabulous makeover in the process – I almost cried with joy! She came by and gave me the most fabulous Carine R.-style, deep brown smoky eye and sculpted cheeks, and my husband and I hit up a favourite restaurant with me beaming for the first time in a while.
Needless to say, the lady is an absolute treasure, so I was so damned excited to hear that she will be broadening her creative reach in offering creative direction, support, training and vision with a relocation to Sydney, Australia from March 2013 with the newly created role of Senior Artist – Oceania. And she’s done her time – she was first appointed to the role of M.A.C Senior Artist – New Zealand in 2006, and has worked providing makeup direction with New Zealand’s finest across the fashion, music, theatre, dance, ballet and film industries as well as working at various international Fashion Weeks including Milan, Paris, New York, Sydney & Tokyo. She’s also been a stellar interview subject over the years, and one of the nicest bloody people in the industry to boot.
Joining her will be the also fabulous M.A.C Australia Senior Artist Nicole T, who will also take on the new title of Senior Artist – Oceania. I was lucky enough to have lunch with the two of them at Café Sydney in April of last year, during a one hour long break from their frantic work backstage at MBFWA. The occasion was an interview for the latest issue of KAREN magazine and to say it was a joy and  honour would be an understatement.
Love these ladies to bits – congratulations all round!

How to: Emily Blunt at the 2013 Golden Globes by Laini Reeves for Moroccanoil

I’m a bit of a fan of Brit beauty Emily Blunt, who I’ve loved in movies as far ranging as The Devil Wears Prada and Looper. Whether she’s a fiery redhead in the former or a burnished blonde in the latter she gives great hair, and the look created for her red carpet appearance at the recent Golden Globes drew from a whole other aesthetic again.
A Golden Globe nominee for Best Actress, she wore a golden Michael Kors gown and an equally shimmering modern hair look by Laini Reeves for Moroccanoil.
Reportedly inspired by Audrey Hepburn’s elegant look in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” but dragged into the now with some very clever tweaks, it was a “minimal look that showed off her beautiful features, with simple lines and an unstructured texture with lots of shine,” stated Reeves.
Reeves created the look thus:
1. She started by shampooing the hair with Moroccanoil Extra Volume Shampoo and Moroccanoil Extra Volume Conditioner, before applying the new Moroccanoil Volumising Mousse to give light volume and shine, and for a flexible, natural-looking hold.
2. Next, she added a small amount of Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream from roots to ends, then flipped her hair over and dried it upside down. She used my fingers to separate and define strands for texture as they dried.”
3. She then pulled Emily’s hair into a high ponytail, “still using my fingers to keep the texture messy, and secured it on the crown with a hair band.”
4. She then held the ponytail out and sprayed it from base to ends with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray Medium.
5. Twisting the hair around her fingers, “I made a loose bun held around the base with bobby pins. It was important not to make it too large or too tiny, but the right size to suit Emily’s bone structure and profile”. Once it was in place, she tweaked and pulled at the bun to create the right texture.”
6. To finish, she sprayed my comb with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray Medium and used it to smooth the hairline.

Beautiful!

Love it: the Bobbi Brown Pink & Red Collection

On counter right now, the Bobbi Brown Pink & Red Collection is one of the prettiest, most practical and infinitely wearable makeup offerings I’ve seen in a while. There is not one thing in there that you wouldn’t end up wearing to death, and quite possibly purchasing again and again!
With this collection, Bobbi Brown says that she “took an unconventional approach to the season’s traditional colour palette,” and that the new collection definitely is NOT about matching your lips, cheeks and nails (god forbid). To once again quote the inimitable Bobbi herself: “I love pink and red worn together – it’s a very modern mix (and perfect for Valentines’ Day)”. I couldn’t agree more!
I fell in love with Bobbi’s Creamy Matte Lip Color formula when it was first released, and think it’s the perfect mix of classic and thoroughly modern. Its shade offering is well edited and highly pigmented, and the new release for this collection – Hot (above, left), a true hot pink – is yet another one I’ve become addicted to. Just beautiful!
The collection also includes two nail shades that are great when worn together on alternate nails (or even as a chic French), two sheer lip glosses for the glossy girls out there and two Sheer Color Cheek Tints, which are as flattering as it gets and incredibly foolproof to apply.
So there you go – Bobbi does it again! Love this collection.

Love it: Pureology Perfect 4 Platinum Reconstruct Repair Masque

I’m still working a balayage-style colour this season (effortlessly achieved thanks to the wonderful Ivan at Stephen Marr Ponsonby), and although it’s a pretty low maintenance gig, I live in constant fear of ratty ends after years of being blonde in my early thirties.
The key is adding nourishment where it’s needed and just taking good care of where it’s not, and my current product line up really reflects that. I use a volumising shampoo but a hydrating conditioner, and my ends are looking the best they have in years thanks to a weightless, nourishing masque from the epic Pureology brand.
Called the Perfect 4 Platinum Reconstruct Repair Masque, it is a concentrated masque that penetrates deep into hair's cuticle to strengthen, soften and rescue high-lifted or highlighted hair with an intense dose of strength. It’s a wee miracle if ever I tried one, and that can also be said of the majority of releases from the Pureology brand.
I love the Pureology range of “good for you, good for your hair and good for the environment” range of high performance haircare products, which are amongst the best on the market for those that like their beauty with a conscience. Jim Markham created the Pureology line in Irvine, California in 2001. The very clever chap revolutionized colour care and gave it a moral compass, launching the first 100 per cent Vegan formulas and ZeroSulfate shampoos for colour-treated hair to an eager audience of consumers much like myself. Jim identified a need among professional colourists and their clients for gentle, naturally based products that deliver superior performance and keep your colour looking great for longer, and today, Pureology is the number one colour care brand in the USA. And as an added bonus, the company are committed to delivering superior hair colour care through the most indulgent products and services, while preserving and promoting environmental sustainability.
The core values of Jim and his team have led the company to become one of the first prestigious haircare brands that embraces and pioneers sustainability. “We continuously strive to achieve the most decadent experience while preserving our environment with sustainable practices,” they say, which is about as eco luxe as it gets! They have several systems on offer depending on your hair type, and the Perfect 4 Platinum is targeted at the blonde bombshells out there that really care for their colour.
But back to the masque! It contains five times more Keravis than Perfect 4 Platinum Shampoo and Condition to equalize and even out porosity, and truly transforms damaged blonde hair with improved elasticity and a dose of shine. It has kept my ends from going brassy even over the holiday season when I was seeing a bit of sun, and it’s ridiculously easy to use. Just shampoo and rinse, then apply the masque leave on for about five minutes before rinsing out. That’s it! Too easy! And bloody amazing…

Beauty news: big congratulations to award winners Sodashi

Already award winners in the media and in my beauty books, absolutely flawless Australian based skincare company Sodashi has just been recognised as the ‘Most Effective Anti-Ageing Spa Range’ in The SPA Traveller 2012 Awards too.
Considered by many to be “the purest skincare brand in the world”, Sodashi have been harnessing the benefits of natural ingredients to produce effective, chemical-free skin care products and spa therapies since 1999. As a lover of those rare moments when all natural-meets-high performance in the world of beauty, I for one am a huge fan of the brand and its inspirational founder, Kiwi Megan Larsen. To say that Sodashi products - formulated using a unique combination of biochemistry, aromatherapy and Ayurvedic principles – are amongst the best out there would be an understatement, and this latest award shows that many others agree!
A Sanskrit word, Sodashi translates to ‘wholeness, purity and radiance’ – the values on which the company and its products are based. As well as producing beautiful, desirable products, their absolute commitment to working in harmony with nature is reflected across all areas of the business, a factor you can’t help but admire. Not a single synthetic chemical, preservative or fragrance is used in the Sodashi manufacturing process. Products are never tested on animals and Sodashi packaging is recyclable and printed with natural vegetable dyes, and they must be doing something right as the range is available at many of most exclusive resorts and spas worldwide.
The SPA Traveller Awards reveal the ultimate global spa destinations and products as voted for by its international readers, and winners include some of the world’s hidden gems along with the best romantic getaways, family-friendly destinations, urban spas and well-being retreats. Awards also went to Gaia Retreat & Spa (one of my favourite destinations) as ‘Reader’s Choice Ultimate Wellness Spa’ and Four Seasons George V Paris as ‘Best Hotel/Resort: France’. Naturally, both are proud Sodashi stockists!
Other brand new Sodashi exclusive spas are ‘Opium Spa’ at The Siam Hotel, Bangkok; The Spa at Four Seasons Milan; The Spa at Four Seasons New York and the spa at Villa Dubrovnik. And all are now officially added to my bucket list! Well done Megan and congratulations to all of the wonderful Sodashi team x

All about: PREVAGE Anti-Aging + Intensive Repair Daily Serum

When Prevage first hit the beauty scene all those years ago, the roar of excitement it created could be heard around the world and showed no sign of letting up. A few years later the brand could have happily been sitting back on its laurels enjoying the success of those first few product releases, but instead it’s stayed at the head of the pack in terms of research and constant innovation.
Their latest release to hit the counters in 2013 is an Anti-Aging + Intensive Repair Daily Serum, which blends their legendary Idebenone - reportedly the world’s single most powerful antioxidant - with an exclusive new ingredient called Arazine. By protecting skin from oxidative stress, Idebenone not only shields skin from environmental effects, it also helps to support the skin’s natural repair process and restore a youthful appearance. Arazine, a new molecule exclusive to Prevage, has antioxidant properties that helps protect against free radicals, soothe skin and reduce signs of aging caused by chronic inflammation. Elizabeth Arden Research & Development has discovered that the combination of Idebenone with Arazine helps neutralise 95 per cent of environmental free radicals and minimises the signs of aging caused by cellular inflammation (the primary cause of signs of aging), making this a very powerful cocktail.
It’s a heady mix that has been clinically proven to immediately improve the appearance of lines and wrinkles, radiance and gently firms the look of skin in just a few weeks. Over time, it supports skin’s own natural collagen and elastin to help protect from environmental assaults. A powerful blend of Retinyl Linoleate, Silicon Derivatives, and peptides evens skin tone and support skin’s own natural collagen to reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles and firm the look of skin, which is pretty much the end result that we are all looking for!
It’s used twice a day after cleansing, making it a super simple addition to your routine.
Prevage Anti-Aging + Intensive Repair Daily Serum 30ml has a RRP of $399.00 and will be available from all Elizabeth Arden stockists from 29 January 2013.

Love it: Dr. Hauschka Med Ice Plant Face Cream

As someone with extremely sensitive skin at times – and eczema to boot – I have to be acutely aware of changes in temperature and the like, as well as keeping help on hand when itchiness and irritation hits. My toddler son is the same, and we are always on the hunt for the latest and greatest to add to our first aid kit.
The latest we’ve fallen in love with comes from the Dr. Hauschka Med range, and is known as Ice Plant Face Cream. I’m a huge fan of the brand’s Ice Plant Cream for use on the body, but this new formula takes things to another level and has been blended to work beautifully on the delicate skin of the face.
A hydrating composition of premium botanical oils are in there to provide the skin with immediate protection; whilst the rich freshly pressed juice of the ice plant and the precious oil of white poppy harmonise to impart the skin with lasting stability.
The juice of the ice plant has long lasting soothing and moisturising effects on dry skin. It’s a true specialist when it comes to getting water, and thrives on sand/clay and even salty soils. Its secret lies in its green - or sometimes intensely red - leaves, which are thick and succulent and covered with glittering fluid reservoirs which sparkle in the sun like dew drops or ice crystals. It’s a pretty incredible plant, and in this wee tube of cream can be a real lifesaver if dryness and itching are the bane of your life. The new product was developed in cooperation with experienced dermatologists, who also recommend the use of this fragrance-free product for children.
You can use it regularly to restore skin’s balance, or just when you need it. Apply 1 to 2 pumps of cream to your face on a daily basis, and as it is rapidly absorbed it is totally suitable for use under makeup as well. Love it!

Beauty moment: Penny Sage designer Kate Megaw

The latest Penny Sage collection for Winter 13 is much like its creator, designer Kate Megaw – preternaturally smart, effortlessly cool and totally real. Called ‘Hey Moon’, it is packed to the brim with pieces that I saw, felt and immediately needed right now, including the Horizon Romper and Bixby top I’ve posted here. Too much pretty!
Designer Kate’s label Penny Sage has had various incarnations since launching in 2006 when the talented blonde first used the name for her final collection while studying design at Wanganui College of Design. The name comes from her mum's maiden name, "and I always had an obsession with the name Penny", she has said in the past. She first created a series of hand-knitted rompers and long socks that were picked up and sold through the heavenly Miss Crabb store, and then Kate went to work with designer Kristine Crabb; who has continued to act as a sort of mentor ever since.
She now creates all manner of beautiful things in the form of seasonal full collections, and I remain a huge fan of her style to this day. The whole latest shebang makes me want to – were money no object – own the lot, just to play dress ups daily and roll around in it like a snow-bellied kitten.
Needless to say, I wanted to know more about what makes Kate tick, and ran a few beauty questions by her…

What is your fave piece from the new collection, and why…
I'm especially excited about the Quantum Leap coat. The fabric is so beautiful; I think it could be my dream coat. Only a very limited number will be produced too, so it will be super special for whoever else might get one.

Are you a lipstick or eye makeup girl?
Eye makeup… but lipstick is fun too!

Do you spend a lot of time on 'beauty business' in the morning?
I have a very simple beauty routine that hasn't changed much in the last 10 years bar a few brands, so I've got it down in a mad rush.

Do you have a favourite skincare or makeup brand?
I love Eve Lom cleanser, Liz Earle moisturiser, Mecca Cosmetica SPF 30+ and Nars tinted foundation.

What is your desert island product, the one you cannot live without?
Mecca Cosmetica SPF 30+!

Who cuts/styles your hair?
Carlos at Helmut.

What makes you feel beautiful - maybe red lipstick, a day at the beach, a vodka or two?

Love it: M.A.C's killer In Extreme Dimension Lash

When it comes to lashes I like to take things as far as they can go – I don’t wear much makeup at all apart from in the evening, and love a dolly lash whether my eye look is stronger than my lip or not. There is just something so damn flirty and fun about long, sexy lashes with a hint of curl, and I’ve tried just about every mascara out there to achieve just that.
The latest to hit my lashes is the rather serious-about-a-statement In Extreme Dimension Lash from M.A.C, which is an absolutely killer formula. The key ‘love’ factor for me with this baby is the lightweight whipped formula, which feels like almost nothing on your lashes but saturates from root to tip, enhancing volume, creating curl and extending length, while conditioning for softness and flexibility. Think an end result that looks like highly defined lashes that are also clump-resistant, non-flaking and non-smudging. That is a serious lash!
The M.A.C patented brush design holds more mascara as rows of tiny micro fibres weave in between lashes to separate, define and pump up quite literally lash-by-lash, and I love the graphic packaging too.
It comes in just one, deep shade of Black Extreme – a true carbon – and is destined to be a permanent fixture in my kit from here on in.
M.A.C In Extreme Dimension Lash is on counter now – if you’re a lady who loves a luscious lash then get in there!

I try: a four-month course of lash enhancing Latisse

I’ve seen a plethora of lash-enhancing products flooding the beauty market over the past 18 months or so, and have tried a few with varying degrees of success. Some definitely help nature along a little, but the only one that I’ve tried and can honestly say makes a serious difference is Latisse.
As you get older you definitely notice a change in your lashes. Maybe they have lost their fullness or appear shorter? Or lighter in colour? If it’s something that you want to address then Latisse is the only FDA-approved solution that I have come across that actually does what it says – although it doesn’t happen overnight.
Latisse solution works gradually - with full results at week 16 – so it’s a product you definitely have to commit to once you start brushing it on. Once you begin, you must continue applying the topical solution each night and follow the directions for best results, and I found that just adding it as another step in my nightly routine was absolutely no hassle at all. If you stop using it at any time, your eyelashes will return to their previous appearance over several weeks to months.
You'll first begin to see changes in length. Then, gradually, you'll notice more thickness and darkness in your lashes. If you're satisfied with your results by week 8, don't stop there. Stick with the treatment. After week 16, you'll see the full effect and after that, you can talk to your doctor about ongoing use.
Given that Latisse is a prescribed solution, you just can’t use one that’s been left in the bathroom by your sister or flatmate - you really need to go to a doctor and discuss the details involved. And as with all lash enhancing solutions, make sure that you do not apply them while your contact lenses are on. It is also important to keep everything sterile and to not contaminate the applicator/brush with your fingers, especially if you haven’t washed your hands. Refer to the leaflet that comes with the solution for instructions on how to properly use the product though and you’ll be totally safe to begin application. Only apply at the base of upper lashes too –you seriously don’t need any extra growth on the lower!
When I first starting using Latisse I experienced some dryness that was easily relieved with my usual eye drops, and is apparently a common side effect. Four months on I’m just using it every other day and my lashes are pretty spectacular. It may be one of the pricier options on the market but this puppy works – if you need some length then I highly recommend you give it a whirl!
*I get my Latisse from the fabulous Dr. Teresa Cattin at FaceWorks, you can contact her here*

In love with: Clarins Limited Edition 3-Dot Liner

First things first – Happy New Year everyone! And here’s to a stellar 2013 free of the stresses and sadnesses that seemed to befall far too many people I know over the past one (myself included). New year, whole new bucketload of positivity – bring it on!
But back to beauty. Over the break I have had ample time to play with a plethora of new goodies, and to use them in a variety of circumstances – the beach, the pool, the party and the bbq with friends. One of the first I tried which I’ve completely fallen in love with is Clarins Limited Edition 3-Dot Liner  - oh why must you be Limited Edition! – which is part of the Ombre Mineral Colour Collection due for release in late February.
It’s a pretty damn revolutionary pen-like eyeliner that gives you longwearing results in quite an unusual way. It has a soft, three-pronged tip that glides easily between lashes drawing a precise line that is never messy or runny. In other words: a totally new way to apply liner. The very cool “trident” tip gives you precision control for an almost flaw-free effect, with the three prongs filling in the spaces between each lash, dot-by-dot, to accentuate eyes and add volume to lashes.
I feared this may be a total gimmick when I first spied it, but it actually works a treat! It is a good choice for those of us out there who don’t like wearing eyeliner at all but still want their lashes to look full and defined, or is the absolute cherry on the top if you like a dramatic eye like me. Pure genius!
The Limited Edition 3-Dot Liner will have an RRP of $51.00 and is available from February 25, 2013. Grab one I say… hell, grab two!
