Holiday, festy hair how-to with ghd’s Michael Mendel

I love an unabashedly extra hair look, and there is simply no excuse not to go big and bouncy during the party/festival season and beyond.
With all of that in mind, I asked the super charming and very stylish Michael Mendel, ghd NZ senior educator (currently holidaying in Brazil, so jealous!) for a little how-to that will take you all through the silly season and well into 2023. Its goal is effortless looking, textured waves that can be dressed up – or down – according to your needs, using ghd tools and some of their most in-demand products.

So with no further ado… presenting Michael’s step-by-step for fabulously festive hair:

1. Prep wet hair using ghd Pick Me Up volumising spray on roots, middle length and ends. The lightweight formula containing the ghd heat protection system, creates an invisible thermal layer between heat and the hair. It also provides instant root lift and leaves the hair looking fuller with volume and body.

2. Using the ghd Helios Hairdryer and ghd paddle brush, start drying the hair brushing the roots up to encourage lift and volume and then dry the rest of the hair.

3. When the hair is dry, mist ghd Curly Ever After through hair for maximum curl longevity and definition, with a natural shine, while also protecting against heat damage.

4. Working with 2cmx2cm sections to create textured waves, use the ghd Platinum+ vertically with the tool pointing down - this direction will avoid the curl bouncing too much and will create a more modern look. Direct the styler at 180 degrees turns and glide the styler down, alternating the direction every section. Working at an optimum styling temperature of 185 degrees, the ghd platinum+ hair straightener protects the integrity of your hair without compromising on style, allowing for 70 percent stronger hair, 75 percent more shine and two times better colour protection.

5. After doing all the alternated curls sections, use the ghd Detangling Comb to comb the curls down. This wide tooth comb will turn the curls into waves, creating texture, and a chic beach vibe.

6. Hair accessories are an amazing touch to add personality to the final hair style, we’ll leave the creativity up to you!

Michael adds that his look is also a great foundation for textured ponytails or messy buns, all of which are perfect for switching things up as day turns to night…
