Beauty news: Dyson has dropped even more beauty, and yes – it’s elite
Just over a year ago, Dyson surprised us all by releasing its first ever styling products to complement its popular hair tools: a Pre-Style Cream and Post-Style Serum (they come in four variants, to work across all hair types and offer light or rich conditioning - love). All of the formulas were tested in 80 percent relative humidity, the most challenging environment when it comes to maintaining a hairstyle, and proved to be the high performing hair solutions you never knew you needed – but now can’t live without.
Rather than harnessing the latest technology, this time the team at Dyson turned its attention to ingredients and the power of nature to find solutions for achieving the ultimate hair health and more. They hit on an ingredient found in the cells of mushrooms—chitosan—which gives them their structure and shape. There are five mushrooms’ worth in each bottle of Dyson’s new hair products, which benefit from what it is calling triodetic technology. The chitosan is blended with different ingredients to create formulas for different hair types. Grapeseed oil is for finer hair, while coconut oil offers a creamier texture for those like me in need of more moisture. Low- and medium-molecular weight hyaluronic acid is also in there to protect against humidity and stop frizz in its tracks, and as for the oh-so-satisfying magnetic lids and precise 0.22ml dosing administered from a single pump—which takes the guesswork out of how much product to use, reduces waste, and stops you from applying too much—pure magic. These were soon joined by the Dyson Chitosan™ Multi-use styling spray, for a veritable holy trinity for great hair.
Now, the brand has unveiled two new additions to its haircare collection in the form of the Dyson Omega™ Nourishing Range. Powered by a unique blend of seven omega-rich oils, including sunflower oil harvested from Dyson’s own farms in Lincolnshire, UK, the range is comprised of a hydrating hair oil, which boosts and restores hair, and a leave-in conditioning spray that nourishes and detangles to deliver instant and long-lasting nourishment for all hair types.
"We’ve brought together two completely different worlds – farming and beauty – to develop a product that unlocks healthy hair with quality ingredients,” says Sir James Dyson, Founder of Dyson and Dyson Farming. “12 years ago, Dyson went into the beauty world because we saw a real problem that needed solving. By investing in research and deeply understanding the science of hair, we discovered ways in which our technology could radically improve hair health. Leaps in innovation – such as our motor, heater, and airflow technology – allowed us to revolutionise haircare products and achieve step-changes in performance. Meanwhile, in an entirely different field, we have spent over a decade experimenting and investing in precision farming. We have focused on growing the best, tastiest and most nutritious produce, farmed sustainably and efficiently while protecting the environment and encouraging biodiversity. It’s a passion and in the process, I became very interested in how the farms could pioneer ingredient-led beauty products that aid hair health.”
Omega is the first Dyson product to feature an ingredient grown on Dyson Farms, which was established in 2012 and is now Britain’s largest farming business, with 36,000 acres of working land. It is a top five producer of wheat grains, malting barley, oil seeds and potatoes in the UK, and more recently, it expanded its crop portfolio to include sunflowers for the Dyson Omega™ range. The farm’s nine-hectare sunflower field is now home to over 800,000 sunflowers, which weren’t chosen for their looks, but for their unique chemistry: sunflower oil is rich in essential fatty acids, particularly omegas 6 and 9, which help to deeply moisturise the hair, smooth the cuticle, and reduce frizz. Thanks to its lightweight molecular structure, the oil absorbs quickly into the hair shaft without accumulating build-up. Love that!
Thus far I’ve been having a good old play with the Dyson Oli7™ blend, which also includes six other plant-based oils, each selected for its unique properties. It's already doing wonders for my compromised ends, and it comes enriched with antioxidants and carefully selected ingredients for protection against heat and mechanical damage. It’s formulated without silicones for quick absorption and has the most beautiful lightweight feel and I’m also in love with the very Dyson-coded bottle, which is simply too chic to hide in a bathroom drawer.
The Dyson Omega™ leave-in conditioning spray is another winner, going to work instantly nourishing, smoothing and conditioning hair, for effortless detangling and reduced breakage. It’s also designed to enhance all hair types, and I’ve found a little goes a long way. It starts as a thicker gel-like cream in the bottle, transforming into a lightweight mist when dispensed, and once again, the packaging is perfection.
Both are available now from Dyson.co.nz and select retailers, and come highly recommended.
