Met Gala Hair How to: Karlie Kloss by Harry Josh for Goldwell

With 2020’s event cancelled and this year’s gala postponed from its normal date in May to coincide with the end of New York Fashion Week, many of the Met Gala’s high profile guests were absolutely gagging to bring something fabulous out the gate. And they most certainly did.
The charity event, which raises money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art is unlike other red carpets like the Golden Globes or VMAs, which precede film or music awards. Instead, the Met Gala is an unashamed celebration of fashion – in all its wild, crazy, elegant and fabulous forms. This year was no different, with a focus on outfits, hair and makeup that were that little bit extra and kept social media literally humming for the entirety of the night.

One of my favourite looks of the night (there were many) was that bought out in full force by lady in red Karlie Kloss, who wore a stunning Carolina Herrera gown. The 29-year-old supermodel was accompanied by the gown's designer, Carolina Herrera creative director Wes Gordon, and thanked her stylist Kara Welch, hair stylist Harry Josh and makeup artist Hung Vanngo profusely on her socials. They had a wonderful canvas to work with of course, but the end result was a perfect balance of winning silhouette and style.
Hair super stylist Josh worked with Goldwell products to create a slick, chic bun to balance the drama of Karlie’s bold, architectural red dress. For a breakdown on how to recreate her red carpet look yourself, read on…
1. Josh began by washing and conditioning Karlie’s hair with Goldwell Dualsenses Bond Pro Fortifying Shampoo and Conditioner to strengthen it before styling began.
2. Prior to drying, Josh then applied Goldwell StyleSign Flat Marvel Straightening Balm from root to tip to protect hair from hot tools and provide long-lasting frizz control.
3. Unlike an ordinary bun, Josh then separated hair into three different sections and pulled each one back into the bun, leaving the centre part for last. This allowed him to create brush strokes upward toward the crown, while still giving the drama of the center part.
4. Each section was secured in place with the Goldwell StyleSign Just Smooth Sleek Perfection Thermal Spray Serum to fight humidity throughout the night.
5. Because high wattage, red carpet shine was key, Josh finished the look with the Goldwell StyleSign Just Smooth Diamond Gloss Protect & Shine Spray, which delivers intense shine, for a silky smooth touch and glossy surface, and locked it in with the Goldwell StyleSign Perfect Hold Magic Finish Lustrous Hairspray.
