All about: The Ordinary’s impressive new lip formula
Over a private dinner in Sydney in August, I was introduced to the remainder of the year’s incredible line-up of fresh innovations from The Ordinary, a brand that never does things by halves.
Each and every new formula was greeted with much excitement by the group of beauty and lifestyle journalists and editors in the room, a feeling shared by the brand’s Consumer Education Manager, the inimitable Liam Hislop.
But one of the formulas revealed that definitely got more than a few gasps and chic fist pumps took the form of a very promising new lip formulation, which plumps lips immediately while enhancing natural lip definition, shape and colour over time. I was gagging to give it a whirl, and when a sample finally arrived a couple of weeks ago that’s exactly what I did.
Meet: HA + Asiaticoside Lip Treatment
The Ordinary is as famous for its tricky to pronounce product names as it is for its industry-disrupting releases, and HA + Asiaticoside Lip Treatment is no different. It’s a mouthful in more ways than one, I became an immediate raving fan.
Essentially a volumising lip emulsion that plumps and reduces visible signs of lip ageing by supporting the lip’s natural biology for a fuller look, its powers of hydration are super impressive.
Formulated to support endogenous hyaluronic acid and natural collagen, the small but mighty lip treatment helps to restore bounce and suppleness to lips and offers an immediate visible plumping effect with zero tingling sensation. It also visibly enhances natural lip colour in a subtly gorgeous way, defines the lip contour for a fuller shape and prevents moisture loss for smooth, soft and healthy looking lips.
Key to its efficaciousness are:
Fermented Hyaluronic Acid: Maintains the skin barrier to help prevent dehydration and supports the skin’s natural hyaluronic acid content for improved plumping hydration from within.
Micro-Encapsulated Hyaluronic Acid: An encapsulated high-molecular-weight form of hyaluronic acid for deep hydration and visible plumping.
Asiaticoside: A molecule isolated from Centella Asiatica that supports the lip’s natural collagen for visibly reduced lip fine lines.
Goji Berry Extract: A liposoluble extract derived from antioxidant-rich goji berries, that helps to reduce the appearance of uneven skin tone.
How does it feel?
Like nothing on the lips. The non-sticky texture provides an emollient, occlusive layer that cushions the lips without feeling heavy, and yes, it plays beautifully with makeup.
Since the formulation leaves behind a glossy finish, it is great for layering. You can apply it on top of your preferred lip cosmetics, such as lipstick, lip liner, tints, or stains, to achieve a glossy finish, and for extra plumping benefits, apply HA + Asiaticoside Lip Treatment onto clean, dry lips at least twice daily.
I was already a huge fan of using The Ordinary’s PHA 5% Exfoliating Lip Serum a few nights a week before bed to gently remove dead skin cells and smooth lip texture without abrasive scrubbing, and I’ve found that when used in combination with the new HA + Asiaticoside Lip Treatment it’s a pretty dreamy combination.
The takeaway
After using this for the past few weeks, I’m in love. I definitely put it to the test last week in particular, when on a travel story assignment in the South Island’s high country I was being battered by high winds and cold temperatures for days and experienced zero chapping or dryness when I went to bed at night – no small feat.
