All about: The 2023 Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Campaign

We are now well past the half way point of October, the month that sees breast cancer awareness and research bought to the fore. As a two time breast cancer survivor, it’s a tough month for me (my most recent BC-related surgery was just months ago), but one that highlights the importance of self-checking, advancing research and generally placing the topic on the table to be discussed without shame.
Did you know that 31 years ago there was no pink ribbon campaign to raise awareness of breast cancer? Women around the world were dying from the disease but there was very little discussion about it. A philanthropist as well as an innovator, the legendary Mrs. Evelyn H. Lauder saw an urgent need to bring breast cancer to the forefront and put a spotlight on this world health issue. So in 1992, she became a pioneer for the breast cancer movement, co-creating the pink ribbon and launching The Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Campaign. A year later, she founded the Breast Cancer Research Foundation® (BCRF), a non-profit organisation, to generate funding solely dedicated to breast cancer research.
Today, the pink ribbon is the ubiquitous symbol of breast health and the campaign is a global leading voice for breast cancer, igniting a worldwide movement that has funded innovative research and awareness, and inspired meaningful action. Early detection was rarely discussed prior to Lauder’s work, and without it, many lives were lost. Today we talk about breast cancer in private and in public, and women are all the better for it.
This October signifies the 31st year of The Campaign, and together, The Campaign and The Estée Lauder Companies have raised more than USD $118 million globally for lifesaving research, education, and medical services.
The Estée Lauder Companies NZ has supported longstanding charity partner, Breast Cancer Foundation NZ since its’ inception in 1994, working to help raise funds and bring awareness to the cause with the common goal of zero deaths from breast cancer. The fact remains, breast cancer is still the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide. And breast cancer is not a single disease, but many diseases – and they impact everyone differently. By approaching breast cancer as a diverse disease, The Campaign continue to help identify and address the disparities that exist around the globe in areas such as prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, education, and support services.
Through the invaluable efforts of employees, consumers and partners, The Campaign continues to drive forward meaningful impact in support of the global breast cancer community in a multitude of ways, including:
* Funding medical research and fellowships worldwide
* Identifying and addressing disparities that exist across the entire breast cancer landscape
* Advancing conversations on the importance of breast health education and early detection by facilitating discussions between the breast cancer community, medical experts and key opinion leaders
* Funding medical resources and services including access to mammograms and screenings for vulnerable groups with limited access to healthcare
* Positively impacting the lives of people with breast cancer and their families by helping to provide support, therapy and counselling programs

So where do you come in? Well each year come October, four of The Estée Lauder Companies’ beauty brands raise funds for the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ (BCFNZ) through product sales, helping to advance the possibility of a breast cancer-free world.
