Talking to Carla Oates, founder of The Beauty Chef about GLOW AGELESS

I have long been an unabashed fan of The Beauty Chef, which was a true pioneer in the inner beauty arena that championed quality supplementation alongside great skincare (as the key to your healthiest skin ever) long before anyone else did. With the belief that glowing skin begins with your gut, The Beauty Chef has over the years developed an ever-growing product range that includes bio-fermented, probiotic-rich wholefood supplements and organic topical skincare that support gut health and glowing skin, and each release is as exciting as the last.
Carla Oates is the woman behind the brand, after she discovered that beautiful, glowing skin begins with a healthy gut after healing her family's skin issues with a gut-healing, wholefoods diet. The journalist and stylist then started The Beauty Chef in 2009 in her Bondi kitchen, where she began experimenting with lacto-fermenting skin-loving superfoods and created the first inner beauty powder - GLOW. It was a runaway success from the get-go, and the inspiring beauty entrepreneur now works with a team of leading microbiologists, naturopaths and nutritionists and employs cutting-edge research to develop uniquely formulated products.

The latest to land is The Beauty Chef’s GLOW AGELESS, which has been specifically formulated for women aged 50 plus to transform skin, boost immunity, energy and overall well-being. A daily supernutrient probiotic beauty powder that promotes glowing skin, improved gut health, immunity, energy, bone health, hormonal health and general wellbeing, it delivers a powerful combination of certified organic probiotic wholefoods including nutrient-dense shiitake mushroom, as well as the likes of maca and grapeseed extract with provitamin A, which is necessary for the cellular turnover process, vitamin C for collagen formation and iodine for normal production of thyroid hormones.
The dream combination for an age group largely ignored by many brands or inevitably put in the “too hard” basket, GLOW AGELESS is personally super exciting for me, and I wanted to know more. So, I had a chat with Carla prior to the products release to get a deep dive into the research behind it, and what makes The Beauty Chef herself tick…

Was GLOW AGELESS a product that was being asked for by your customers, as well as one you started to see a need for personally?
As a brand, we want to inspire and empower our community to embrace the process of ageing. But the reality is that as we grow older, our body’s needs change and evolve – so we created an evolution of our best-selling GLOW Inner Beauty Essential with additional nutrients to target specific age-related concerns.
As we age, our hormones (which are critical for our overall wellbeing and vitality!) shift and decline – with some hormones metabolised more slowly, while others are simply produced less or at a slower rate than they were at a younger age. This is why GLOW AGELESS contains iodine (derived from kelp), which is necessary for the normal production of thyroid hormones, as well as traditional hormone-supporting herbs such as maca, shatavari, grapeseed and pine bark which have each been selected for their ability to nurture our hormonal wellbeing and balance.
Similarly, until the age of 50, our bone health and bone density remains fairly stable – but as we age, there tends to be a gradual and progressive decline. While this is a normal process, we can support our bone health with GLOW AGELESS as it contains nutrients like magnesium – which supports both bone health and structure – as well as vitamin D (in the form of shiitake mushroom), which is also critical for bone health.

How long has it been in development?
It was in development for four years before we perfected the formula.

How did you select the ingredients – I don’t think I’ve ever seen niacinamide in an edible beauty product before!
GLOW AGELESS is an evolution of our first-ever product GLOW Inner Beauty Essential. When I created GLOW back in 2009, the concept of inner beauty was very left of field and the idea of an inner beauty powder formulated from fermented foods with probiotic bacteria for gut health and glowing skin was even weirder! I was told by numerous people that it was too strange a concept and wouldn’t ever take off. But I felt so passionate about what I had discovered - a real solution to skin and gut issues that I knew worked. I am a big believer that beauty is wellness and wellness is beauty. If you look after your gut, your skin will not only be healthier, but your body and mind will be too.
For both GLOW Inner Beauty Essential and GLOW AGELESS, we draw on the latest research into the bioactivity of fermented foods, prebiotics, probiotics and postbiotics and the microbiome to continually strive to improve our methodology when it comes to reformulating existing products or working on new product development. Both products also contain nutrients including zinc, vitamin C, vitamin A and B vitamins for healthy skin, hair, nails, energy and immune support.
GLOW AGELESS contains additional ingredients that target age-related concerns. This includes magnesium from marine minerals and vitamin D-rich shiitake mushroom (to target bone health), along with iodine derived from kelp and traditional thyroid-supporting herbs such as maca, shatavari, grapeseed and pine bark (to support hormone balance).

What do you think is the perfect Boost to accompany it – some of them I’ve never heard of, like ADAPTOGEN and OMEGA ELIXIR?
This really depends on your skin concerns and goals. A lot of our customers choose to pair GLOW AGELESS with COLLAGEN Inner Beauty Boost. This is a delicious combination that helps to plump skin from within, boost collagen production and target the visible signs of ageing.

What else personally are you doing to ease your way into your later 40s and then 50s, any extra lifestyle changes, rituals, or practices?
To be honest, I thought I would be young forever and sometimes when I go to do certain things, physically, that require higher levels of dexterity and co-ordination, I notice that I am not as adept as I once was. Of course I’m still determined to try, but the reality is that I’m not as agile!
I enjoy that I’m not as worried about what other people think as I did when I was younger. This is very liberating! I’m also much more focused on getting rid of the noise and focusing on things that bring me true joy - relationships with family and friends, connection with nature and exploring my creativity.

Do you have any more topical products in development? I love your oil!
I’m so happy to hear that! GLOW F.A.C.E. was released earlier this year and it’s been amazing to see that it has been received so well. As a former Beauty Editor, I’ve always been very interested in topical skincare and how to best support skin health through both the gut and skin microbiome, so from both inside and out. All I can say is, watch this space…
