Laneway Festival: The Beauty Edit

In Tāmaki Makaurau, Laneway is almost upon us – and I’m excited. I’m planning on a chill afternoon dipping into some of my current favourite acts like Wolf Alice and Wet Leg, culminating in - of course! - Queen Chappell Roan as the sun sets.
On the #motd from, there's definitely no shortage of festival-ready beauty trends to choose from, but inspiration is only half of it. Once you're in the thick of things, you'll want a fuss-free look that stays on throughout the sunshine, sweat, and occasionally inclement Auckland weather.

Choose One Focus Feature for Your Look
When it comes to festival makeup, modern beauty icon and celebrity makeup artist Sarah Tanno recommends to "pick a single focus feature" in your makeup look—such as the eyes or lips. Pick one thing that you’re not going to fuss over, and go forth and make it stick. By choosing a dramatic eye, lip, or cheek, you only have to worry about touching up one part of your face throughout the day, and can keep the rest of the look low-maintenance.
Or simply grab a marvellous multitasker that you can throw in your pocket or bag and have on hand all day long if touch ups are required, like the newly dropped M·A·C Powder Kiss Lip + Cheek Mousse (below), which delivers an airy, whipped texture with a soft matte, airbrushed finish for lips and cheeks.

Use a Waterproof Setting Spray
Setting spray is essential for creating a makeup look that holds up against sun, sweat, and hours of dancing. Look for a waterproof formula, and apply it between each layer of your makeup for an added boost (then another spritz once everything is applied)
I love Smashbox Photo Finish Endurance Setting Spray for festival-type occasion, which creates a lightweight breathable barrier that perfects the canvas by smoothing the look of makeup, strengthening skin against the environment, and boosting hydration. This formula absorbs super quickly and helps keep your makeup waterproof, transfer, sweat and humidity-resistant.

Layer Powder Over Your Cream Products
Layering a powder formula over your favourite cream can boost staying power without dulling your favourite glow-giving product. Apply your cream highlighter first (exactly as you normally would), then sweep a powder highlight over the same area—the same rule of thumb is true for blush and bronzer.
A favourite highlighter formula of mine is Too Faced’s Moon Crush Out Of This World Highlighter, which is a vegan-friendly, creamy powder highlighter that delivers a glossy, luminous glow. Alternatively, Half Magic’s Glitterpuck Multi-Use Pressed Fairy Dust is definitely festie approved, being a sparkling pressed glitter with the glide of a gel and the staying power of a powder.

Use Setting Powder in Controlled Areas
You definitely want to set your makeup with a powder, especially in your T-zone area, but to keep things nice and fresh, most makeup artists recommend applying powder only where you're particularly oily for a more natural effect. Personally, I’m not one to cover the whole face in powder, mainly because it’s way more flattering IRL when a delicate sheen takes effect when the temperature rises.

Don't Skip SPF
Music festivals aside, SPF is the single-most important product to incorporate into your skincare routine—but it's of particular importance when spending extensive time outdoors. When attending a music festival this season, be sure to apply a sunscreen that's labelled as SPF 30 or higher, water-resistant, and broad-spectrum (and reapply every two hours).

See you at Laneway!
