She’s iconic: celebrating the reinvention of Estée Lauder Double Wear

“If it isn’t broken, why fix it” is a saying we all know well, and for many longtime fans of the original Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation, the iconic formula simply wasn’t broken. A fail-safe for those seeking flawless, full coverage that could stand up to tears, sweat, humidity and more, it has been a favourite with brides, CEOs and MUAs since its launch in 1997, so why mess with it? Well cosmetic chemistry has improved exponentially since then, and very few formulas have remained unchanged for this long. For Estée Lauder, it was time for an update.

Meet Double Wear Stay-in Place 2.0
Acknowledging that consumer needs have evolved and science has advanced, the new Double Wear is everything you love about the original, now with even better makeup and skincare benefits so it is truly made for more.
The brand has dubbed it “the new full-of-life matte”, and the just dropped, extremely buildable, breathable long-wear foundation is most definitely made for more, with even more to love.
First up, the new Double Wear Stay-in Place is a more dimensional matte formula with medium to full coverage that moves and breathes with skin. It feels almost weightless, and comes with a skin-like feel that unifies uneven skin tone and covers imperfections, while reducing the look of pores. I was immediately struck by the consistency which is so much more fluid and spreadable, meaning it is infinitely more layer-able to build the perfect level of coverage.
The new formula is also even more long-lasting, with 36-hour colour-true long-wear thanks to a breathable polymer system that acts like an invisible net, allowing the formula to move and breathe with skin. The result is ultra-comfortable, transfer-proof and waterproof colour coverage that’s also sweat, heat and humidity-resistant, and each drop encapsulates no less than 20 trillion colour-treated micro-pigments that are fully oxidised and stabilised to deliver uniform, skin-true coverage that does not shift or change throughout the day.
I was worried that the new formula would be too matte for my mature, on-the-dry-side skin, but that is definitely not the case. Instead, it immediately balances skin with both oil control and hydration, making it a winner for so many skin types.
Lastly, this baby is available in even more tailored shades than its predecessor, crafted using the same true-to-skin match technology but with enhanced colour-treated micro-pigments in a more dimensional finish. On offer is an amazing 67 tailored shades across 10 intensities and 3 undertones, truly realising than no skin is the same.

My verdict

I have been playing with this new formula since being gifted a bottle almost a week ago, and these are my thoughts:
As aforementioned, you can feel the difference in the new formula from the first drop. It's more liquid-y than the original, and where one drop did the job with the OG formula, it takes two or three to get the same level of coverage. But this is definitely not a complaint - it allows the wearer to customise their coverage level, which I love. This version can be light, medium, or full, but it’s important to let each layer dry down a bit before adding more for the best results. Oh and I was the same shade as the original, but with so many more now on offer I highly recommend a new shade match just in case!
It’s clear that the brand had a long checklist when developing Double Wear 2.0: a more fluid, spreadable, and layer-able texture; a more dimensional, skin-like finish; and more stable and true-to-skin shades. Did it deliver? It most definite did, with my only gripe being that it still doesn’t come with a pump! I love pump delivery as I’m a hygiene obsessive when it comes to makeup, but many who aren’t as painfully OCD as me will completely gloss over this details lols!

Highly recommended for longtime users and those yet to embrace myriad charms, the new Estée Lauder Double Wear is available now at esteelauder.com.au / esteelauder.co.nz, and participating retailers. RRP AUD$83 / NZD$93
